The Fellowship of the Ring: Ch 9-12

Chapter 9 - At the Sign of the Prancing Pony

  • The man stared after the hobbits for a moment, and then he went back to his house. As soon as his back was turned, a dark figure climbed quickly in over the gate and melted into the shadows of the village street.

Q1 - What is this?

  •  ‘Mind yourself! Don’t get lost, and don’t forget that it is safer indoors!’

Q2 - Are you shocked that Merry and Pippen were the two who stayed behind?

  • Suddenly Frodo noticed that a strange-looking weatherbeaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall, was also listening intently to the hobbit-talk. He had a tall tankard in front of him, and was smoking a long-stemmed pipe curiously carved. His legs were stretched out before him, showing high boots of supple leather that fitted him well, but had seen much wear and were now caked with mud. A travel-stained cloak of heavy dark-green cloth was drawn close about him, and in spite of the heat of the room he wore a hood that overshadowed his face; but the gleam of his eyes could be seen as he watched the hobbits.
  •  He felt the Ring on its chain, and quite unaccountably the desire came over him to slip it on and vanish out of the silly situation. It seemed to him, somehow, as if the suggestion came to him from outside, from someone or something in the room. He resisted the temptation firmly, and clasped the Ring in his hand, as if to keep a hold on it and prevent it from escaping or doing any mischief.

Q3 - What is happening with Frodo here?

  • ‘Certainly!’ said Frodo; but his heart sank. He wondered how many private talks he would have before he got to bed, and what they would reveal. Were these people all in league against him? He began to suspect even old Butterbur’s fat face of concealing dark designs.

Q4 - Is this Frodo, or the Ring?

Chapter 10 - Strider

  • Well, you know your own business, maybe,’ said Mr. Butterbur, looking suspiciously at Strider. ‘But if I was in your plight, I wouldn’t take up with a Ranger.’ ‘Then who would you take up with?’ asked Strider. ‘A fat innkeeper who only remembers his own name because people shout it at him all day?

Q1 - What do you think of book Strider?

  • All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.

Q2 - Amazing way to end a letter.

Chapter 11 - A Knife in the Dark

  • There was a faint stir in the leaves, and a cock crowed far away. The cold hour before dawn was passing. The figure by the door moved. In the dark without moon or stars a drawn blade gleamed, as if a chill light had been unsheathed. There was a blow, soft but heavy, and the door shuddered. ‘Open, in the name of Mordor!’ said a voice thin and menacing.

Q1 - Fatty Bolger is a brave hobbit!

Q2 - How terrifying is this?

Q3 - What do you think of Sam reciting that poem?

Q4 - What do you think of the Beren and Tunivial story?

Chapter 12 - Flight to the Ford

Q1 - What is happening to Frodo being stabbed?

Q2 - Do you like the amount of songs in the book?

Q3 - What do you think of Glorfindel?

[00:00:00] One of the first things I want to talk to you guys about is, we talked about this last episode, but how do you guys like the amount of songs that are in this? Or poems or whatever they are?

[00:00:12] I don't like them.

[00:00:14] I was gonna say I like this section of songs better. I think because they're longer and I felt like there was less of them.

[00:00:21] Yeah?

[00:00:21] I don't know. I felt like there was less.

[00:00:24] That's because you're rapping them too, right?

[00:00:26] Yeah, this is true.

[00:00:28] I would love for you to do the audiobook reading of you rapping the lyrics.

[00:00:31] That would be so bad.

[00:00:33] No, I'm just saying them with a little bit of a beat in my head.

[00:00:38] But I think I like them when they're longer better because I feel like they're telling a story.

[00:00:42] Yeah.

[00:00:43] And like you're getting more history in these songs too.

[00:00:46] There is a point I like that as well. I think I would like it more if I was reading it.

[00:00:50] But when I'm listening to it, there's a point where Andy Serkis is singing the songs.

[00:00:54] And then like I'll be doing something and then all of a sudden I'm like, is he still singing this song?

[00:00:59] Yeah, I know.

[00:01:00] And then I'll look at my book and I'm like, this is like a three page long song.

[00:01:03] Yeah.

[00:01:03] This is crazy.

[00:01:05] We got the heads up though.

[00:01:07] Yeah.

[00:01:07] Last time, right?

[00:01:08] When you were flipping through, you're like, whoa, there's a long one coming on.

[00:01:13] I like when the song is a clear part of the story.

[00:01:17] And before this, the songs felt thrown in there.

[00:01:21] Like, uh, J.R.R. just wanted to write one.

[00:01:25] Yeah.

[00:01:25] He's like, oh yeah, I gotta get this off my chest.

[00:01:27] But here it felt like they made sense.

[00:01:28] When Frodo sang the song on the table, it worked.

[00:01:32] And when Sam sang the song again, it was like someone entertain us, I guess.

[00:01:38] Yeah.

[00:01:38] Because they were asking for that.

[00:01:39] So it made more sense to me.

[00:01:41] I kind of liked it.

[00:01:42] There's also a point.

[00:01:42] I don't know.

[00:01:43] Maybe this is like a thing that's something that I just never experienced.

[00:01:46] I don't know if I've ever experienced like you're going into a bar and like you walk into the bar because everyone's singing because everyone seems happy.

[00:01:53] I don't think I've ever walked into a bar where people are singing.

[00:01:56] I would love that experience.

[00:01:57] That'd be so fun.

[00:01:59] It'd be so awesome.

[00:02:00] Yeah.

[00:02:01] Yeah, that's true.

[00:02:02] Yeah.

[00:02:03] It's hard to relate to it.

[00:02:04] But that's, I think.

[00:02:06] Have you ever been to a bar where they're singing?

[00:02:09] Yeah.

[00:02:09] Really?

[00:02:10] I'm jealous.

[00:02:11] What do you mean by singing?

[00:02:12] I've done either.

[00:02:13] Even karaoke kind of.

[00:02:15] I've done it where like you're the crowd loving the songs like Sweet Caroline.

[00:02:19] Whenever that comes on, literally everyone's screaming.

[00:02:22] And if you're walking in the sidewalk, you like look in and you're like, oh my gosh, they look so fun.

[00:02:26] Let's go in.

[00:02:28] So that's a good point.

[00:02:29] That is the modern version of this.

[00:02:30] And sports games and stuff like that.

[00:02:31] Karaoke-ing is also a fun one.

[00:02:33] I've done that a ton of times.

[00:02:35] I think this just to me, the songs really made it feel more authentic because it feels like it would in medieval times.

[00:02:43] Yeah, it does.

[00:02:44] Where you don't have your records, your CDs, your iPods, your whatever.

[00:02:49] Yeah, they didn't have music blasting so they gotta fake music themselves.

[00:02:54] So they gotta fake music themselves.

[00:02:55] I feel like the value of song was greater back then in some ways.

[00:03:00] So this just feels so authentic.

[00:03:02] I also feel like it's easier to read, but harder to.

[00:03:08] I like that I can read at my own pace, but then I can't find the rhythm until I'm like, you know, halfway through the song and I'm like, I think I'm reading it in a good rhyme scheme.

[00:03:16] So I'm so curious how Andy Serkis does it.

[00:03:19] But you're probably absorbing the lines.

[00:03:21] Like I'm not listening to the lyrics.

[00:03:23] You just zone out.

[00:03:24] You're like, oh, whatever.

[00:03:25] But then I also I'm reading as if it's gonna give something away and then I get to the end and I'm like, I think that was pointless.

[00:03:32] Yeah, I'm trying to read them.

[00:03:33] Like what is this about?

[00:03:34] This is a clue.

[00:03:36] They have really important ones.

[00:03:38] Some are just throwaways.

[00:03:39] Like the one, the one line that Gandalf gives, I was like absorbing.

[00:03:43] It's like, I feel like that's the whole story encapsulated into one small little poem.

[00:03:46] Yep.

[00:03:47] He writes, it says like a PS.

[00:03:48] I'm like, that's the greatest way to end the letter right there with that little poem.

[00:03:51] I'm gonna start ending letters like that.

[00:03:52] Oh, that one was good.

[00:03:54] Yeah.

[00:03:54] And then all of a sudden Sam sings one.

[00:03:56] P.S. P.P.S.

[00:03:56] P.P.S.

[00:03:57] It was great.

[00:03:58] I loved it.

[00:04:00] But some of them just have no meaning and I'm trying to parse it out.

[00:04:03] And then I like how some of them, there's some stanzas of certain songs in the movies and then they're not till the end.

[00:04:10] So it's like, I'll recognize that song at the end.

[00:04:12] And I'm like, why didn't Andy Serkis sing it like the, like it is in the movie?

[00:04:16] It would have been so much greater, but it doesn't.

[00:04:18] I love how you like know the rhythm of the movie one.

[00:04:21] Yeah.

[00:04:22] And it is shocking to me too, because they spend, like, I did not think there were so many songs in the movies, but there are.

[00:04:29] There's a ton of songs and music.

[00:04:31] Oh, because you're reading these songs and you're like, oh yeah, that was in it.

[00:04:33] Yeah.

[00:04:33] And I'm like, wow, they did a lot of singing in the movies that I did not even recognize at first.

[00:04:37] Yeah.

[00:04:38] Well, that's the problem with a book.

[00:04:40] You, but honestly, that's where the movies can do so well in a book.

[00:04:45] The song has your full attention because it's obviously it's right there.

[00:04:48] But in the movies, there are so many opportunities for songs to be in the background.

[00:04:52] Kind of where they should be.

[00:04:53] You know, so that you can have Mary and Pippin dancing around singing about the green dragon.

[00:04:59] Don't tell your family.

[00:04:59] And it's not your full attention.

[00:05:01] You're doing something else.

[00:05:02] You're having a conversation.

[00:05:03] And then every once in a while you peek over and you know, you see them and they're laughing

[00:05:06] and it's fun.

[00:05:06] But then back to a conversation.

[00:05:08] Yeah.

[00:05:08] But in the book, you're like, all right, three pages.

[00:05:10] Here we go.

[00:05:11] Yeah.

[00:05:11] So it's just different.

[00:05:12] We've had this discussion last week, but it's like there's so many songs in the series

[00:05:15] that it just is shocking me a bit.

[00:05:18] How much is like poetically or musically fashioned.

[00:05:22] It's like their culture though.

[00:05:23] Yeah, exactly.

[00:05:24] I love it.

[00:05:24] I feel like it fits Hobbits to always be singing.

[00:05:28] Yeah, exactly.

[00:05:30] So true.

[00:05:30] Walking through the roads and the woods.

[00:05:32] I'm sure Tolkien would walk into some of these English bars in like, you know, the

[00:05:36] early 1900s.

[00:05:37] And I'm sure that's what people were doing back then.

[00:05:39] No phones, no TVs.

[00:05:41] Yep.

[00:05:41] Maybe like a radio playing some music, but not really.

[00:05:44] So I'm sure people were trying to even think when we were in Europe though.

[00:05:47] Yeah.

[00:05:48] There wasn't much music that I even remember.

[00:05:52] Maybe it was too early.

[00:05:53] Like in places in general.

[00:05:54] Yeah.

[00:05:54] Because we went to, we went to the one bar that had the.

[00:05:58] The grapes.

[00:05:59] Yeah.

[00:06:00] Yeah.

[00:06:00] Gandalf's pub.

[00:06:01] Oh, that's right.

[00:06:02] Yeah.

[00:06:04] That was really cool.

[00:06:05] But you're right.

[00:06:06] I don't remember any music.

[00:06:08] I also think of like.

[00:06:09] You were having trivia night.

[00:06:11] Yeah.

[00:06:12] Well, I don't know.

[00:06:13] You know, if there is a place that still has music, it'd be some Irish pub.

[00:06:16] Yeah.

[00:06:17] Um, where they're just chanting along to some old song.

[00:06:20] I can picture it, but we just don't, we don't do that in the States.

[00:06:24] Yeah.

[00:06:24] In Scotland either.

[00:06:26] We'll have to bring it to the States.

[00:06:28] Yeah.

[00:06:28] We got to bring it.

[00:06:28] They did have music.

[00:06:30] And one of the ones we went to, it was later.

[00:06:32] Remember there was a, Oh, there was a guy playing in the front of it.

[00:06:37] Oh, that was Scotland on the one.

[00:06:39] Yeah.

[00:06:39] When we had dinner.

[00:06:41] Yeah.

[00:06:41] We had dinner.

[00:06:41] There was some, they were, they were like setting up the play.

[00:06:43] Yeah.

[00:06:44] You're right.

[00:06:44] You're right.

[00:06:44] They were setting up to play live music.

[00:06:46] And now I'm thinking there was actually a couple.

[00:06:48] Anyways.

[00:06:48] I just didn't notice it was in the background.

[00:06:50] It was in the background where it belongs.

[00:06:52] Sorry.

[00:06:52] Anyway, welcome to the podcast.

[00:06:54] I'm John.

[00:08:11] Okay, let's do a summary of chapter nine because we're going to be doing nine, 10, 11 and 12.

[00:08:17] Nine is at the sign of the Prancing Pony.

[00:08:20] Ah, the crew goes into Bree to start the chapter.

[00:08:25] The Prancing Pony is the local pub.

[00:08:28] They went in, they had fun, a little too much fun.

[00:08:31] And Frodo accidentally puts the ring on.

[00:08:34] They met Strider and he knows a weird amount about them.

[00:08:38] Like a creepy amount.

[00:08:40] A creepy amount.

[00:08:41] Like he's been creeping.

[00:08:42] You're like, what is going on here?

[00:08:44] It made some of what he knows.

[00:08:46] It makes me want to re-read through the chapters and see if like there's any hints of like Striders in the woods peeking through the bushes.

[00:08:52] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:08:53] Like looking for them.

[00:08:54] I can't that.

[00:08:55] The one that he climbs over the gate.

[00:08:56] Yeah, yeah.

[00:08:57] That was creepy.

[00:08:58] But he wouldn't be at the Brandywine bridge, right?

[00:09:01] That was the Wraith still?

[00:09:03] Well, honestly, I did think about it only because I didn't think of the black riders as crouching.

[00:09:09] Yeah, that felt out of character, but they're changing reading the books compared to the movies because in the movies I feel like they're so upright and mysterious.

[00:09:18] And when they talk, it's so wispy and like screamy that it doesn't feel human.

[00:09:24] But then this I'm like, they feel a little bit more human.

[00:09:29] But I still have a hard time picturing them crouching.

[00:09:31] But Strider, Aragorn, I can picture him getting on the ground and like feeling the grass or smelling something and being like, four hobbits came through here.

[00:09:40] Because that was a disparity that I had to we'll talk about Strider in the next chapter as well.

[00:09:44] But he's his character is so interesting to me in the books because in the movies they make him this guy who like I keep thinking of in the second movie when he's like a hobbit lay here and another hobby here.

[00:09:59] I'm like, you're looking at the dirt in the ground.

[00:10:01] There's no way you can tell that.

[00:10:03] But they make him this incredible tracker.

[00:10:04] I like how in the books he's like almost he's like world renowned as this tracker, but he's not that he's not like movie good.

[00:10:12] Yeah.

[00:10:13] He's like he's like I have to double back.

[00:10:15] He's like doing all these things in the movie he would never do.

[00:10:18] You're right.

[00:10:19] Even when the perfect by the river, he's like you guys already walked around here and ruined it.

[00:10:24] I can't see anything anymore.

[00:10:26] But you're right like in the movie there were orcs everywhere and a few hobbits in the middle and yet he knows exactly where they were.

[00:10:34] Yeah, you're right.

[00:10:34] Unrealistic because he's and this is you'll notice this too when you watch the movies.

[00:10:38] He's less refined in his tracking abilities in the books, but he is more refined altogether to me in the books right now.

[00:10:45] What did you what was your guys initial impression of Aragorn here?

[00:10:51] He seems like rougher on the edges, but he seems like he is ready to be king.

[00:10:58] Hmm.

[00:10:59] Like I didn't trust him at first.

[00:11:01] Oh, yeah, sure.

[00:11:02] Right.

[00:11:03] I love Sam's hesitation with trusting him.

[00:11:05] Yeah, because I would have been like him.

[00:11:07] Yeah, I would have been like Sam.

[00:11:09] We don't even know just because he says.

[00:11:12] Yep.

[00:11:13] That he can lead.

[00:11:14] Exactly.

[00:11:14] I love all Sam's questions, too.

[00:11:17] He's like, when someone do this, why?

[00:11:18] Well, how do we know you didn't murder Strider and you're just like, you know, fall?

[00:11:21] I know that was actually great questions.

[00:11:23] You just told us to be cautious.

[00:11:25] Yeah, now you're saying trust you without questions.

[00:11:27] Come on.

[00:11:30] I still feel like he's rough around the edges.

[00:11:32] Really?

[00:11:33] Um, you know, it just I was like Sam reading it.

[00:11:36] Like, why would I?

[00:11:38] Why would I trust him?

[00:11:39] Why is he being so weird?

[00:11:40] Why isn't he mentioning Gandalf?

[00:11:42] This doesn't seem to make sense.

[00:11:44] But then when he explained it, I was like, oh, all right.

[00:11:46] Fair point.

[00:11:47] Well, maybe rough around the edges is the wrong way I'm saying it.

[00:11:50] I think he is rough around the edges.

[00:11:51] I think what I'm talking about more is in the movies, he doesn't want the king role in this.

[00:11:56] Yeah.

[00:11:57] Carrying around.

[00:11:59] Yeah.

[00:11:59] Isildur.

[00:12:00] And I was like, oh, he's like, which is shocking.

[00:12:02] He's carrying around the shards of Narsal, like the half of half the sword hill of what

[00:12:07] like the sword.

[00:12:07] So it's like this ancient sword and his sword broke.

[00:12:11] Um, and it's like the sword, like the king sword of Griffin, of Griffin.

[00:12:15] Oh, wow.

[00:12:17] Twice in one episode.

[00:12:17] We watched Harry Potter right now.

[00:12:19] Of Gondor.

[00:12:21] Nice.

[00:12:22] Um, and he's like carrying this around and he seems like he wants to take this on and

[00:12:26] he wants to be king.

[00:12:27] Yeah.

[00:12:27] He seems like he's marching toward this goal.

[00:12:29] Whereas in the books, he looks like, or in the movies, he seems like he wants nothing

[00:12:32] to do with it.

[00:12:33] Yeah.

[00:12:33] No, that's a good point.

[00:12:34] And in the movies, it feels.

[00:12:37] Yeah.

[00:12:37] Go for it.

[00:12:38] What?

[00:12:39] This might be wrong.

[00:12:39] I haven't watched in a while, but I thought he was like, liked by everyone also in the

[00:12:44] movies and in the books.

[00:12:45] He's it seems like they don't really know anything about him or he's mysterious.

[00:12:50] And they're like, well, I'm not so sure about this character.

[00:12:53] He's also kind of a jerk.

[00:12:56] And me.

[00:12:57] He said this one line.

[00:12:59] Did he?

[00:12:59] I don't know.

[00:13:00] To the barkeeper?

[00:13:01] I don't remember.

[00:13:02] I'll reiterate that.

[00:13:03] I think that's in the next chapter, but I was kind of shocked.

[00:13:06] I just thought, yeah, that he was like liked by everyone and it doesn't seem like that

[00:13:11] in the books.

[00:13:12] It felt to me like he was trying to like keep up his persona of like being the ranger

[00:13:17] and like, he's like, oh, I'm rough around the edges, but like, you need me to guide

[00:13:23] you and I'm like so skilled.

[00:13:24] But I feel like he was purposefully trying to be like at the edge of the room and like,

[00:13:28] nobody really knows about me.

[00:13:29] Like, yeah, I don't know.

[00:13:30] I felt like he was just trying to be that way on purpose.

[00:13:33] When he comes into the scene, it was pretty cool because like the movies, I think that

[00:13:36] a really good depiction of that, like he's hanging out in the back, like smoking his

[00:13:39] pipe home.

[00:13:40] Like the books kind of painted that exact picture.

[00:13:42] Yeah, you're right.

[00:13:42] Really well.

[00:13:44] But he it's such a more slow burn in the book, too.

[00:13:47] Like he just lets the whole.

[00:13:48] Yep.

[00:13:49] Scene unfold and then is like, oh, Frodo, you shouldn't have done that.

[00:13:52] Whereas in the movie, it's just like, boom.

[00:13:54] Yeah, everything happens.

[00:13:56] And you just dress him because he's Vigo and he's like an incredible.

[00:13:59] And I also I don't know if you were reading this for the first time with no context, if

[00:14:04] you would put together that he was the one searching for Gollum with Gandalf at the beginning

[00:14:10] because you don't get his real name right away.

[00:14:12] So by the time you get his real name, you you there may be in separate worlds in your mind.

[00:14:17] So I do like it when we're reading it, because then he's not a brand new character that you're

[00:14:23] still learning to trust on some level.

[00:14:25] Then once you get his name, you're like, oh, wow.

[00:14:27] So Gandalf actually trusts him.

[00:14:28] And it seems like he's worked with Gandalf before and he knows what's going on.

[00:14:33] He knows the whole story.

[00:14:34] So it's just really different viewing his character now.

[00:14:38] But I don't know which one is better.

[00:14:40] Yeah, I like that they're different, though.

[00:14:43] Like I and Nemo's like in the chat, too.

[00:14:45] It was just like he says movie Aragorn is a modern interpretation of what a hero should

[00:14:50] be in fantasy.

[00:14:51] Book Aragorn is what the perception was 100 years ago, which I kind of love that.

[00:14:55] Like I'm kind of I think that's a I like that there's differences between these characters.

[00:14:59] The same thing with Frodo in this chapter, particularly in this chapter, he and did you what?

[00:15:11] Like what did you notice for his character differences?

[00:15:13] Maybe that's just my question.

[00:15:14] Did he have any small slight differences in his characters this chapter or any of these

[00:15:18] chapters versus the movies?

[00:15:21] No, just versus like even the previous chapters that we read because part of me is confused

[00:15:26] here because he has some what seemed like out of character moments to me that seem like

[00:15:30] the ring is corrupting him in some way.

[00:15:32] Wait, I'm I think I lost some of you.

[00:15:36] I'm so sorry.

[00:15:37] Who are you talking about right now?

[00:15:39] Frodo.

[00:15:39] Okay.

[00:15:39] Sorry.

[00:15:40] Yeah, that's why skiffed skiffed and jumped.

[00:15:43] I felt like the difference from the movie was him getting on the table and singing at

[00:15:50] all felt unique because I was like, oh, wait, whoa, what's happening?

[00:15:55] This bar is a different vibe in the movie.

[00:15:58] The bar was a little more intimidating.

[00:15:59] Everyone looked angry a little bit and you're like, ooh, but here it feels way more fun and

[00:16:04] jolly.

[00:16:05] And then he's up on the table and singing a song, which I just didn't expect.

[00:16:09] Yeah.

[00:16:10] So it felt like he's more lighthearted.

[00:16:12] And it also in general felt like Frodo had more control in the movies.

[00:16:17] It kind of feels like he's just going with the flow a little bit.

[00:16:20] He's feels kind of timid, but it feels like he's a little bit more commanding in this.

[00:16:24] I don't know how to describe it.

[00:16:26] Yeah.

[00:16:27] He's like, yeah, he's.

[00:16:28] In previous chapters.

[00:16:29] But yeah, in previous chapters, I don't know, because it feels like he's stepping into responsibility

[00:16:35] a little more like he's trying to lead and take the lead and like make calls.

[00:16:41] But it also feels like one of his first big calls is saying, oh, I don't trust that.

[00:16:47] It was Sam and Pippin who were at, you know, talking about the bar and he's like, they're

[00:16:53] going to spill the beans.

[00:16:54] I got to step in.

[00:16:54] Yeah.

[00:16:55] So there was a certain arrogance to it, because obviously in the end it caused way more trouble

[00:16:58] than they would have caused from whatever they would have said.

[00:17:02] But I don't know if I've noticed any other differences.

[00:17:04] Like, did you feel like he was acting different in this chapter or the rest of these?

[00:17:11] I feel like I agree with what you're saying, but then I was wondering, is it possible that

[00:17:16] like the ring gives you like a confidence thing?

[00:17:21] That's interesting.

[00:17:22] That's too interesting.

[00:17:22] Because I feel like he is different.

[00:17:25] Yeah.

[00:17:26] Where like, I wouldn't have expected him to do that.

[00:17:29] And then other moments later on where it like just, you know, pop.

[00:17:34] I don't know.

[00:17:35] Other instances, I feel like he's being more like risky or like confident or he's got the

[00:17:42] power, but he's not really sure how it's taking over him or how that is being displayed in this,

[00:17:52] these few chapters.

[00:17:53] I'm not really sure what I'm getting at.

[00:17:56] Because at the very least, he has impulses from the ring to at least put the ring on.

[00:18:00] So like he's receiving these things from the ring that are like almost like infecting his brain in some way.

[00:18:08] And that's why he's like, again, I like the differences even between Frodo movie and Frodo book because in the movie, like I can't even, I don't, there's not like a word to describe the difference.

[00:18:20] It's not like wisdom, like in the movies, he's like wise, but he's like less, he's more like a Hobbit in the books.

[00:18:29] We're like, he's on this mission, but he's still like wants to enjoy himself.

[00:18:32] So he still is going down to the bar.

[00:18:34] Mary and Pippen are the ones that's like that leave and they stay, but they stay behind.

[00:18:37] I like that.

[00:18:38] Like they go for their walks.

[00:18:39] Like they're still in their Hobbit routines, doing their Hobbit things.

[00:18:43] I love that.

[00:18:44] They're not just like on this mission, like the movies, like they're dead on this and Mary and Pippen are just a comedic relief that like, you know, go drink and like spoil everything.

[00:18:52] I like that.

[00:18:53] The whole friendship is more complex right now.

[00:18:56] Um, and Frodo in particular seems like that to me, like where he's not just this, like, he's almost shyer in the movies, in the books.

[00:19:06] He's just like doing his own thing.

[00:19:07] He's like 50 years old living his life, very confident in who he is, like knows what he has to do.

[00:19:12] But like he's, he's, if he's at a bar, he's going to go have a good time at a bar and he's gonna sing a song at a bar, you know?

[00:19:17] And I, I think that's kind of great.

[00:19:19] I kind of love that.

[00:19:19] This thing of a song was to distract from, for a purpose, right?

[00:19:25] Yeah.

[00:19:25] It almost felt like he was trying to cut them off.

[00:19:27] Yeah.

[00:19:27] Sentence.

[00:19:28] So he just was like, he like stands on a table, gets our attention.

[00:19:32] Then he's like, now what do I do?

[00:19:34] So what song would Lizzie sing?

[00:19:36] If she jumps on a table, has to get everyone's attention.

[00:19:38] I was not, that was, I was thinking it was completely for like the distraction factor.

[00:19:43] Like, I don't think he was having a good time.

[00:19:44] Yeah.

[00:19:45] Yeah.

[00:19:45] It didn't feel like he was having a good time.

[00:19:46] Yeah.

[00:19:47] But on some level, the fact that that was his instinct meant that there's like, he's a guy

[00:19:52] who likes having a good time.

[00:19:54] I don't know what it was.

[00:19:54] Take the hobbit out of the shyer.

[00:19:56] Yeah.

[00:19:57] Yeah.

[00:19:58] Yeah.

[00:19:59] In the movie, he feels like he's being led everywhere.

[00:20:02] And I like how you said he's shy.

[00:20:04] I agree with that.

[00:20:06] But in between, from the previous chapters to this, I think he seems not necessarily more

[00:20:12] protective of the ring, but like more cautious and paranoid about other people and their relationship

[00:20:19] to the ring.

[00:20:19] Like everyone at the bar, or maybe it's just cause he has to like adopt his new Mr. Underhill

[00:20:26] personality that he's like, he's getting a new personality.

[00:20:29] That he's like really cautious now.

[00:20:30] But that was one thing I noticed.

[00:20:32] And he's like more direct now, I think too.

[00:20:35] Like how he was talking with Aragorn, like he was not giving up any information.

[00:20:40] Yeah.

[00:20:40] I don't know.

[00:20:42] Does, does Frodo to you guys seem mean?

[00:20:46] No.

[00:20:47] Just a little bit.

[00:20:48] And that's, so I get a little, I like I, it's, but I, oh gosh, can't even get words

[00:20:53] out.

[00:20:53] I think both of you guys are right because I don't really perceive him as mean, but the

[00:20:57] times that I perceive him as mean are the times where I think he's like infected by the

[00:21:00] ring.

[00:21:00] Cause this was one of the lines in the chapter where it says, certainly said Frodo, but his

[00:21:04] heart sank.

[00:21:05] He wondered how many private talks he would have before he got to bed and what they would

[00:21:09] reveal.

[00:21:09] Were all these people in a league against him?

[00:21:12] He began to suspect even old, but, uh, butter burrs, fat face of concealing dark of fat face

[00:21:19] of concealing dark designs.

[00:21:21] Like in his head, he's like making fun of these people.

[00:21:23] And like, he's not the nicest to these people.

[00:21:26] And the same thing with Aragorn later, but are these trust issues himself?

[00:21:31] Like Frodo himself, or are they the ring?

[00:21:33] Yeah.

[00:21:34] That, that is a fascinating idea.

[00:21:36] But wouldn't, if it was the ring giving you trust issues, wouldn't it make you trust the

[00:21:42] sketchy people?

[00:21:42] Cause it wants to go to the ring rates.

[00:21:46] Yeah.

[00:21:46] I forget his name.

[00:21:48] The sketchy guy that like gave him out.

[00:21:51] Yeah.

[00:21:52] Wouldn't it like want you to trust him?

[00:21:54] And that's like the thing too.

[00:21:55] Like that, I think that's what we're going to come back to a lot is what is the rings

[00:21:58] power and how do we see it at work and play in the books?

[00:22:01] And right now I don't know, I don't think I see the ring so much as like able to like

[00:22:09] help, like tell you who to trust and who to not trust.

[00:22:12] I think it's just psychologically going to screw you up where I think it's like, you're

[00:22:17] constantly going to be questioning yourself and questioning other people and their allegiance.

[00:22:20] And like, it's going to make you stressed and like freaking out over every little detail.

[00:22:25] I don't think it was this chapter, but there was a line that was like, he Frodo was wondering

[00:22:30] if it was more of the ring, like he put on the ring because the ring wanted him to rather

[00:22:35] than like, because he wanted to.

[00:22:37] And it was just like the power shift of like the ring taking over.

[00:22:41] There was, there was a kind of a line in this one too.

[00:22:43] I wrote that down.

[00:22:44] It says he felt the ring on its chain and quite unaccountably the desire came over him

[00:22:48] to slip it on and vanish out of sight of the silly situation.

[00:22:51] It seemed to him somehow as if the suggestion had come to him from the outside, from someone

[00:22:57] or something in the room.

[00:22:58] He resisted the temptation firmly and clasped the ring and his hand as if they keep a hold

[00:23:03] on it and prevent him from, or prevent it from escaping or doing any mischief.

[00:23:08] That's like, I like that the ring has tiny personality right now.

[00:23:13] It's like, you can see it wants to do its own thing.

[00:23:16] Like it's like fight almost fighting against Frodo for some of these and then realize that

[00:23:20] it's trying to manipulate him in some way.

[00:23:22] But, uh, yeah, I, I like that.

[00:23:25] It's seems to have a mind of its own now.

[00:23:28] Yep.

[00:23:29] Didn't it always though?

[00:23:30] Yeah, I think it did.

[00:23:31] But you're saying like with Frodo.

[00:23:33] Yeah.

[00:23:34] And I feel like for a long, long time, it didn't have that much of a mind of its own

[00:23:41] with Bilbo.

[00:23:41] Not that we saw really.

[00:23:44] And now with Frodo, I think it's starting to get that whether evil is growing in the

[00:23:48] world or whether.

[00:23:50] And that's how I perceived it.

[00:23:51] Yeah.

[00:23:52] Or whether it's just time with Frodo.

[00:23:54] I don't know, but.

[00:23:55] Mm hmm.

[00:23:55] Yeah.

[00:23:56] I think it has to like learn Frodo's personality and business.

[00:24:00] Like they have to.

[00:24:01] Get to know each other a little bit.

[00:24:02] Exactly.

[00:24:03] Know how to manipulate him.

[00:24:06] Which is creepy.

[00:24:07] It's like scary.

[00:24:08] This ring is invasive.

[00:24:10] I think you're, I think you're, yeah, exactly right.

[00:24:13] I think it's creepy that the ring is getting to know him and like figuring out who this person

[00:24:17] is so that it can infect his mind in some way.

[00:24:21] But I don't know.

[00:24:22] Sometimes I don't know if I'm, if at the, at the moment I will say, I don't know necessarily

[00:24:25] if Frodo's, uh, bad qualities are attributed to the ring or if they are just Frodo.

[00:24:32] Mm hmm.

[00:24:35] I don't know.

[00:24:37] Well, the times he's used it so far, he's trying to escape from the situation at the

[00:24:42] bar and then he's trying to escape from the ringwraith itself.

[00:24:48] So I don't know.

[00:24:49] I think later he has like other reasons to put it on, but right now he's just trying to

[00:24:54] leave the situation and like get a free pass.

[00:24:58] Yeah.

[00:24:59] Not have to fight his little battles that he's got himself into.

[00:25:01] This one would be great for an introvert.

[00:25:03] This big party, like lots of issues.

[00:25:05] Oh, slip the ring on and you're out of there.

[00:25:07] Easy goodbye.

[00:25:08] Boom.

[00:25:09] Oh, that'd be great.

[00:25:10] Instead of like Irish exits, you can call them like, I don't know, Frodo exits or something.

[00:25:15] Yeah.

[00:25:15] Right.

[00:25:15] Okay.

[00:25:16] The shire.

[00:25:17] Yeah.

[00:25:18] The shire exits.

[00:25:19] Hobbiton.

[00:25:19] I love that.

[00:25:21] Um, I like that in the song there was a little asterisk.

[00:25:25] Um, and it said, see note on page on mine, 1084.

[00:25:30] And it explains why calendar dates and Roman dates are written that way.

[00:25:35] And I was like, Oh wow.

[00:25:36] Cause that was the thing that threw me out of the world a little bit.

[00:25:39] And he went on to explain it.

[00:25:40] And of course he's got a detailed calendar and the elves have a calendar.

[00:25:44] The hobbits have a calendar and this is what they call days and months and years.

[00:25:48] So I thought that was cool.

[00:25:49] Yeah.

[00:25:49] Deeper world.

[00:25:50] Yeah.

[00:25:51] This world is a lot deeper than Harry Potter.

[00:25:53] I found it already.

[00:25:55] Like even the, how the chapters are in you, like he can't help, but go on to these little,

[00:25:59] little bunny trails here and there.

[00:26:02] Um, which I love.

[00:26:04] I think it's fun.

[00:26:07] Chapter 10 Strider.

[00:26:09] Most of you guys had anything else in this, but chapter 10 is kind of just a continuation

[00:26:13] on this as well, which, uh, is just more of who Strider is.

[00:26:18] And this was the line that I was talking about where he seems mean because he says,

[00:26:24] well, you know, your own business.

[00:26:26] Maybe he said, Mr. Butterbur looking suspiciously at Strider.

[00:26:30] But if I was in your plight, I wouldn't take up with a ranger.

[00:26:35] Then who would you take up with?

[00:26:37] As Strider, a fat innkeeper who only remembers his own name because people shouted him all

[00:26:42] day.

[00:26:42] Oh yeah.

[00:26:43] I remember that line.

[00:26:44] That was shocking to me.

[00:26:46] Yikes.

[00:26:47] Like Aragorn has a little bit of sass.

[00:26:49] Yeah, you're right.

[00:26:50] I don't know why I didn't take it that intense when I read it, but hearing you say now like,

[00:26:54] Oh yeah, that is quite a long.

[00:26:55] That's how it's like read to you in the audio book.

[00:26:58] Yeah.

[00:26:59] Interesting.

[00:26:59] Like a tone of that.

[00:27:01] Yeah.

[00:27:01] I almost thought of it more playful.

[00:27:03] I think when I read it only because I had a hard time connecting Aragorn with that kind

[00:27:08] of sass.

[00:27:08] Maybe it felt like it was kind of like, but also I think I misread a lot of Frodo's lines

[00:27:14] and even Sam's lines earlier as being too sassy instead of being joking around with friends.

[00:27:22] So I tried to lighten the tone of my reading a little bit so it wouldn't come off too heavy,

[00:27:27] but maybe I accidentally lightened it too much.

[00:27:30] Hmm.

[00:27:34] You just got a dono.

[00:27:35] Sorry.

[00:27:35] Two bucks.

[00:27:36] Don't know.

[00:27:37] Hey, nice.

[00:27:40] Um, yeah, I like that you're reading it a little bit different, like with a little bit more,

[00:27:44] more lightheartedness to Aragorn's lines because that one was hard for me to get a grasp on.

[00:27:52] And that's why, again, I like, uh, I like that you kind of corrected it.

[00:27:55] I don't think Aragorn's necessarily more put together.

[00:28:01] I think he's actually now that I think I think he's actually like more rough around the edges

[00:28:05] in the mood in the books than he is in the movies and the movies.

[00:28:08] He's like this.

[00:28:09] He's like a man's man and he still is in the books, but he's like this person is a God

[00:28:13] and he just doesn't want to be king.

[00:28:16] And that's all like, he's already he's confident who he is.

[00:28:19] He's already has everything together knows where he's going knows what to do.

[00:28:22] Exactly.

[00:28:22] Like everything's perfectly in order, but just doesn't want the responsibility of like what

[00:28:27] is calling on him.

[00:28:29] And here he seems like he wants that responsibility, but he's like, I just described him as like

[00:28:34] a greasy smoker kind of like he comes in from like out in the wilderness smoking his pipe

[00:28:39] and then like he's in and he's just like making fun of people and he's like, yep.

[00:28:42] I don't know.

[00:28:43] He just seems a little greasier in the in the books right now than the movies, which

[00:28:46] I kind of like.

[00:28:47] I'm still curious what his motivation is for being the guy he is like.

[00:28:52] I'm just curious.

[00:28:54] Like how does one become a ranger?

[00:28:56] And he's been a ranger in this area for this long that he's gotten nicknames and all

[00:29:01] that.

[00:29:01] Yeah.

[00:29:01] Right.

[00:29:01] Yeah.

[00:29:02] Has he been keeping an eye on Frodo and the ring specifically for like 17 years since Gandalf

[00:29:09] left?

[00:29:10] How long has he been doing this?

[00:29:11] Mm hmm.

[00:29:12] And why?

[00:29:12] Why is he running around the world?

[00:29:13] Just like does he want to learn all of Middle Earth?

[00:29:17] Is he trying to scout a little bit?

[00:29:18] Is it like all for future plans?

[00:29:20] I don't know.

[00:29:21] Yeah.

[00:29:21] Hard to connect with that.

[00:29:23] But in that instance, can it just be like annoyance?

[00:29:26] Like he's annoyed that Frodo is not believing.

[00:29:31] Yeah.

[00:29:31] He just got defensive.

[00:29:32] Absolutely.

[00:29:33] It's classic.

[00:29:33] Yeah.

[00:29:35] I'm sure they've all had long days.

[00:29:36] I feel like even if that wasn't your personality.

[00:29:39] Yeah.

[00:29:40] That's a great point.

[00:29:41] You would react that way.

[00:29:44] I would react that way.

[00:29:46] Yeah.

[00:29:47] Yeah.

[00:29:48] And it's good too because you, you, I like that the hobbits initially don't trust

[00:29:53] him.

[00:29:53] And then I like that Sam withholds his trust in him.

[00:29:55] Even like he, I, I still feel like at the end of chapter 12, I still feel like Sam doesn't

[00:30:01] really trust him that much.

[00:30:04] Like he's still withholding his trust in him to some extent.

[00:30:07] Um, through small little lines he says he gives here and there, but I like that the

[00:30:11] hobbits are a little mistrusting of them and they kind of just come to it.

[00:30:14] They're like, okay, yeah, he definitely knows what he's doing.

[00:30:16] Um, and I like the line of like, you know, a servant of, uh, Mordor would feel fairly fair

[00:30:24] and, uh, what does he say?

[00:30:26] Would, would look fair and feel fowler or something like that.

[00:30:29] That sounds right.

[00:30:30] And then Aragorn was like making a joke out of that.

[00:30:32] He's like, what?

[00:30:32] So I don't look fair.

[00:30:34] But that was great.

[00:30:35] He's like a little sassier in the book.

[00:30:36] Yeah.

[00:30:37] Um, I also think that maybe being fat is less of an insult since this could be medieval

[00:30:44] days.

[00:30:45] Fat just means you're wealthy.

[00:30:47] You're well off, you know?

[00:30:48] And that's why being fatty lumpkin or fatty bulger is not an insult.

[00:30:51] I love that.

[00:30:52] They're proud of it.

[00:30:53] They're just content, you know?

[00:30:55] So he's paying him a compliment.

[00:30:56] Yeah.

[00:30:57] Like it's not, it's not so hard.

[00:31:00] I'm into that.

[00:31:02] Um, and then this was the, uh, poem that we got is the PPS or PPPPS or whatever it was.

[00:31:09] All that is gold does not glitter.

[00:31:12] Not all those who wander are lost.

[00:31:15] Hmm.

[00:31:16] The old that is strong does not wither.

[00:31:18] Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

[00:31:22] From the ashes of fire shall be woken.

[00:31:25] A light from the shadow shall spring.

[00:31:28] Renewed shall be blade that was broken.

[00:31:31] The crownless again shall be king.

[00:31:35] Imagine if you wrote a letter to someone and ended the letter with that.

[00:31:39] It's like the ultimate mic drop.

[00:31:41] Crazy.

[00:31:41] Gandalf wrote that and he just dropped the pen.

[00:31:44] I just wrote a banger right there.

[00:31:46] Oh, I want to just see what looks like.

[00:31:51] Gandalf's little signature.

[00:31:54] Um, all that is gold does not glitter.

[00:31:59] Is that like where that line comes from?

[00:32:02] Yeah.

[00:32:02] So Smash Mouth was, was trying to indirectly quote Gandalf.

[00:32:06] Yeah, they didn't.

[00:32:07] Um, so all that is gold does not glitter.

[00:32:13] It's talking about the ring.

[00:32:15] Right?

[00:32:15] Mm-hmm.

[00:32:16] Um, not all those who wander are lost means this crew.

[00:32:19] Also great line.

[00:32:20] Is that from this book?

[00:32:21] I think so.

[00:32:22] Yeah.

[00:32:22] I know.

[00:32:23] I've seen that so many places.

[00:32:24] It's like on bumper stickers.

[00:32:25] Yeah.

[00:32:27] Yeah.

[00:32:27] I think that literally just comes from this.

[00:32:29] I think it's.

[00:32:29] But then the next lines, I maybe don't quite know, but then ashes of fire shall be woken.

[00:32:36] Balrog vibes, maybe.

[00:32:38] Um, cause although it depends when this prophecy came about, but the Balrog would have already

[00:32:45] been awoken by now awakened.

[00:32:48] Um, but it still could be future tense from when the prophecy poem was written and then

[00:32:54] renewed blade.

[00:32:55] So I feel like this could be a bunch of things in a row.

[00:33:00] This could be four prophecies in one that culminate in, uh, the King and not even four.

[00:33:07] This is like six, seven, eight prophecies.

[00:33:09] Who knows?

[00:33:10] But I'm just curious if they're all different lines.

[00:33:12] All that go.

[00:33:13] All that is gold is not glitter is from Shakespeare.

[00:33:16] Well, fair enough.

[00:33:17] Totally.

[00:33:18] But you know, same thing.

[00:33:20] It's also funny.

[00:33:22] That goes way farther back than I thought.

[00:33:24] Aragorn repeats that back to Frodo without have seen the letter.

[00:33:28] Yes.

[00:33:28] And that's what I love.

[00:33:29] Cause it confirms that Aragorn knows.

[00:33:32] Yeah.

[00:33:32] But it was funny because I understand how you like what you took off this part.

[00:33:39] But when I, when he repeated it back, I thought he was talking about himself.

[00:33:43] Like all that is gold is not glitter.

[00:33:45] Like he was a King, but he's not glittering.

[00:33:48] And then not all those who wander or lost.

[00:33:51] Like he's not, like he's a wanderer.

[00:33:53] Lost King.

[00:33:54] A ranger.

[00:33:54] He's a ranger wandering.

[00:33:57] Yeah.

[00:33:57] So that's interesting.

[00:33:58] No, no.

[00:33:58] That makes perspective.

[00:33:59] Honestly, that makes more sense.

[00:34:01] Cause then I thought maybe he was talking like a poem about Aragorn so he can.

[00:34:08] Yeah.

[00:34:08] Like this whole thing could just be about the future King.

[00:34:12] He's rough around the edges.

[00:34:14] He wanders around.

[00:34:15] Um, he's old.

[00:34:17] The old that is strong does not wither.

[00:34:19] So he's old and strong.

[00:34:21] Sure.

[00:34:22] Deep roots, um, are not reached by the frost.

[00:34:25] I don't know what the frost exactly would be, but I feel like it just means that the,

[00:34:29] the line, the bloodline is still there.

[00:34:31] Like the roots.

[00:34:32] Oh yeah.

[00:34:32] Yeah.

[00:34:32] I love that.

[00:34:33] Yeah.

[00:34:33] Um, I'm like thinking of all these just not like superficially, but like, yeah, like,

[00:34:38] you know, like plant your roots deep.

[00:34:40] I mean, honestly, yeah.

[00:34:45] Um, and then from the ashes fire shall be woken could literally just be like, we're firing

[00:34:51] up the forge.

[00:34:52] Ooh.

[00:34:53] Um, yeah.

[00:34:53] Cause renewed shall be blade that was broken.

[00:34:55] But then a light from the shadows shall spring could be so many different things.

[00:34:59] Light from the shadow.

[00:35:00] I don't know because that could be a bad thing.

[00:35:02] Like Mordor shadows, um, or something else, but then renewed the blade and King.

[00:35:08] So great, great poem there Gandalf, you know, that's, that was also so he could prove that

[00:35:16] he was Aragorn.

[00:35:17] Right.

[00:35:17] So that I think so.

[00:35:18] Right.

[00:35:18] So he could say it and then it would be a quote from the letter.

[00:35:22] He's like, mid poem.

[00:35:23] Eric, one of the sword.

[00:35:24] Yeah.

[00:35:24] He's like, look, this is broken.

[00:35:26] The blade that'd be broken.

[00:35:27] It's going to get renewed guys.

[00:35:30] And has he always been carrying it?

[00:35:32] Like in the movies?

[00:35:33] I don't remember him carrying it at all.

[00:35:36] I almost got the impression.

[00:35:37] It was just held in, in Rivendell or somewhere else.

[00:35:40] It is.

[00:35:41] We just don't write.

[00:35:42] It's in Rivendell.

[00:35:43] It's just there.

[00:35:44] Right.

[00:35:44] So this is kind of funny.

[00:35:47] Yeah.

[00:35:47] Is the rest of it in Rivendell and he just carries the hilt.

[00:35:49] And then there's another point too, where I, I, uh, had to ask Neema this because I saw

[00:35:55] this and I just misread a family tree, but, uh, Elrond's brother is the line of Aragorn

[00:36:01] and Elrond gives birth to obviously Arwen and they get married.

[00:36:06] So they're like marrying cousins or something like that.

[00:36:09] Whoa.

[00:36:10] Or like, no, no, no, no.

[00:36:11] Like this is like grand grand grand.

[00:36:13] Like, cause Arwen is significantly older.

[00:36:15] Older.

[00:36:15] Right.

[00:36:16] So it's like a funny little, little, I don't even know who that is.

[00:36:21] That's what we'll figure it out.

[00:36:22] We'll get there.

[00:36:23] We'll get there.

[00:36:23] We'll get there.

[00:36:24] I don't remember anyone's name.

[00:36:27] I hope you don't.

[00:36:28] You literally mentioned.

[00:36:29] Is that a Liv Tyler?

[00:36:31] Yeah.

[00:36:31] All right.

[00:36:31] Nice.

[00:36:32] You got there.

[00:36:33] Okay.

[00:36:39] I don't know.

[00:36:40] I think, I think so.

[00:36:41] I think around there.

[00:36:41] I don't know exactly.

[00:36:42] But in the movies they like, cause it's, everyone's like 80.

[00:36:45] 23.

[00:36:46] Yeah.

[00:36:47] And then it shows them as like long lost lovers, but nothing like came of it.

[00:36:52] Yeah.

[00:36:52] But maybe I don't remember.

[00:36:53] I don't remember.

[00:36:55] It's okay.

[00:36:55] Yeah.

[00:36:56] Nothing came of it.

[00:36:57] But I'm just saying.

[00:36:58] This will lead us to the next chapter discussion as well, because he sings a song

[00:37:03] of Beren and Luthien or something like that, or like tells the tale of these people.

[00:37:08] Yep.

[00:37:09] And this is essentially like his in like a small little encapsulation.

[00:37:13] Cause he's talking about the, and, um, again, I was, when I was listening to it, I

[00:37:17] was listening to it with a Nemo and he was like giving me some like little details about

[00:37:20] all this kind of stuff, which is fantastic.

[00:37:22] It was so fun.

[00:37:23] But he was talking about how, um, like that story of Beren and Luthien is one of the coolest.

[00:37:29] He like loves it so much.

[00:37:30] He's like, there's lore about that in the Silmarillion or however you say that.

[00:37:34] And, uh, you just get a small little snippet in these books, but he's like the whole story

[00:37:38] is grand.

[00:37:39] It's scheming.

[00:37:39] It's like really, really fun.

[00:37:41] Um, but that's just, it was like the elf maiden laid down her immortality for this

[00:37:49] man who was mortal.

[00:37:51] So they can be together.

[00:37:53] Oh, interesting.

[00:37:55] It also reminded me of the other show.

[00:37:57] The rings of, even though she didn't do it.

[00:37:59] Yeah.

[00:37:59] She kind of did that.

[00:38:00] Like she left to stay on earth.

[00:38:02] Yeah.

[00:38:02] Like she didn't go out.

[00:38:04] Yeah.

[00:38:04] Anyway.

[00:38:06] To the land beyond the sea.

[00:38:07] For a guy.

[00:38:10] Not exactly.

[00:38:11] I have Valethor right now.

[00:38:12] So this is one of the best stories in the legendarium.

[00:38:14] I like that word too.

[00:38:16] Legendarium.

[00:38:16] It's a great word, but, um, yeah.

[00:38:21] Anything else in the Strider chapter?

[00:38:24] It was a great way to end.

[00:38:26] Yeah.

[00:38:27] The, uh, yeah, that letter ending was great, but that whole poem was, yeah.

[00:38:31] I feel like there's a lot of deeper meaning behind that.

[00:38:33] I feel like that's probably the whole series and like an encapsulation, but I can't parse

[00:38:37] everything out quite yet.

[00:38:41] Um, Gandalf's poem.

[00:38:43] Yeah.

[00:38:43] Yeah.

[00:38:46] I'm curious where Gandalf is going at this exact moment.

[00:38:51] Yeah.

[00:38:51] Okay.

[00:38:52] Yeah.

[00:38:52] That's a good point.

[00:38:53] What is happening to Gandalf?

[00:38:55] Hmm.

[00:38:56] Actually we'll talk about the next chapter cause they can, they come across something

[00:38:58] that they think is Gandalf's.

[00:39:00] Um, like where is he going at this moment?

[00:39:03] I was thinking to Saruman.

[00:39:06] Yeah.

[00:39:06] But then I'm like, does that actually make sense?

[00:39:09] And then I'm like, I may be confusing it, but I think he was.

[00:39:13] And then I, maybe it's been too long since I've seen the movies too, but it's for the

[00:39:16] better.

[00:39:17] Um, well I think we're going to get more details about it too, because yeah.

[00:39:21] Right.

[00:39:21] Everything happens quicker in the movies.

[00:39:23] So like Frodo immediately leaves back in.

[00:39:26] It's not like years after.

[00:39:27] Um, so the one thing that I'm curious about is when we, when, when Gandalf probably finally

[00:39:32] does give his, us, his tale about what happened, like, where was he?

[00:39:36] Cause he, he found something out that he wanted to go seek out Saruman in the movie.

[00:39:41] But I'm like, there was years between that.

[00:39:43] So like, where was he?

[00:39:45] What was he doing in between those years?

[00:39:46] He was always keeping a watch.

[00:39:47] He said he always like had a watch person over the Shire over Hobbiton.

[00:39:51] But I'm like, what else?

[00:39:52] Like, what was he, what was he doing in those years?

[00:39:55] If I was just reading this right now with no other context, I would have thought Gandalf

[00:40:01] went off to the South because it sounds like something in the South is happening and they're

[00:40:05] not really saying what they're just saying.

[00:40:08] People keep fleeing North from the South because of something that's happening.

[00:40:11] And in Bree, they're kind of talking about that, whatever this North South road.

[00:40:15] So then I'm like, I was just thinking Gandalf probably went South to go do something with

[00:40:21] whatever drama is happening down there.

[00:40:25] Um, also knob everyone's making fun of him as being dumb, but he did ruffle up some clothes

[00:40:31] and make them look like imitation people in bed.

[00:40:33] So go knob.

[00:40:35] Yeah.

[00:40:35] And also work Strider talks about the black breath, the mentor kiss.

[00:40:41] Oh, classic.

[00:40:43] We've been there before.

[00:40:45] And that's all I got for this chapter.

[00:40:50] All right.

[00:40:51] It's after 11, which is a knife in the dark.

[00:40:53] This is, uh, they are heading on their way.

[00:40:57] They're kind of on their journey.

[00:40:59] Aragorn takes them off path and they have to go through a bog for like three days.

[00:41:05] And then they finally get to Weathertop and Frodo gets stabbed, but it starts with Fatty

[00:41:12] Bulger.

[00:41:13] It was a very brave hobbit, but it was terrifying that this section in the audio books like brought

[00:41:21] a shiver in my whole body.

[00:41:22] Cause it was read so well, it was terrifying when he said there was a faint stir in the

[00:41:27] leaves and a cock crowed far away.

[00:41:29] The cold hour before dawn was passing the figure by the door moved in the dark and the dark

[00:41:34] without moon or stars, a drawn blade gleamed as if a chill light had been unsheathed.

[00:41:41] There was a blow soft, but heavy.

[00:41:43] And the door shuttered open in the name of Mordor said a thin voice and menacing.

[00:41:50] And like the way he reads that in the audio book was chilling.

[00:41:54] It was so good.

[00:41:56] It was terrifying, but I love that Fatty Bulger runs out.

[00:42:01] That was crazy.

[00:42:03] Good move.

[00:42:04] Take action.

[00:42:05] I know.

[00:42:06] Fatty Bulger is great.

[00:42:09] Oh yeah.

[00:42:10] That was a terrifying little section.

[00:42:14] Um, but, uh, what did you guys have in this chapter?

[00:42:16] What'd you see?

[00:42:18] Anything good?

[00:42:22] I like that.

[00:42:23] We do get a lot of lines from the movies too.

[00:42:25] Like, uh, um, I think there was a line.

[00:42:30] What do they get?

[00:42:31] What are the, or what do they eat when they can't get a hobbit or something like that?

[00:42:34] When they're swatting all the flies away in the bog, that's like an extended version

[00:42:38] line from the movies.

[00:42:39] I love that.

[00:42:43] I just was rereading this little section where Fatty's running away.

[00:42:46] So about a mile away, he collapsed on a doorstep crying.

[00:42:50] No, no, no, no, not me.

[00:42:51] I haven't got it.

[00:42:52] And I just thought it's a little sloppy.

[00:42:55] He's saying I haven't got it already.

[00:42:57] Yeah.

[00:42:58] So I just feel like he's a little putting it out there.

[00:43:00] Yeah.

[00:43:00] Um, he's like setting them up on the trail, which is why they are able to see them.

[00:43:04] He's seeing my weather top.

[00:43:05] Yeah.

[00:43:07] Okay.

[00:43:07] And was this, this wasn't a flashback, right?

[00:43:09] This was like, was this happening in the moment or was this maybe like a flashback and like

[00:43:14] a week before or something?

[00:43:15] I think a flashback would make more sense.

[00:43:17] Yeah.

[00:43:17] I thought of it maybe being that way, but I couldn't tell if there was anything to, to

[00:43:21] give us clues.

[00:43:22] Um, but that would definitely make sense.

[00:43:25] Someone says he should have asked for a warrant.

[00:43:34] I felt like the, uh, black riders were smarter in the books.

[00:43:37] Um, even while like Strider is saying it was part of their plan, no doubt.

[00:43:44] Yeah.

[00:43:45] And I'm like their plan, like it feels like they're a little more scheming and coordinating

[00:43:48] and communicating where the movie impression is a little more like they're single minded

[00:43:54] and just like going for the ring without much thought.

[00:43:58] Um, so this makes them more intimidating that it feels like they're coming up with plans

[00:44:02] and they seem less human.

[00:44:05] Like to me too.

[00:44:06] They're like, I don't know.

[00:44:08] They're again, they're more complex characters.

[00:44:10] Like the book is making everyone more complex and more interesting to me.

[00:44:13] Yep.

[00:44:14] It's like a little less cut and dry, which I think is great.

[00:44:17] I love it.

[00:44:17] Like these characters, they, they seem a little less human, like, but at the same time, they,

[00:44:22] they like are disguising themselves well or something.

[00:44:25] I don't know what it would be, but they seem to be men.

[00:44:28] They're not positive.

[00:44:29] Like even Aragorn is confused as to whether the people who are, who are stalking them are

[00:44:34] really the black riders or not.

[00:44:36] And then finally he gets confirmation of it.

[00:44:38] But the whole thing is really fascinating to me.

[00:44:41] Um, I think, yeah, I think these, these, uh, these guys are good.

[00:44:45] I kind of don't like how simple it is that like, if you travel by the light of the day,

[00:44:51] that that's like all they need to erase you from their vision.

[00:44:55] Cause like they can't see you.

[00:44:56] But then it says like the noon sun, like cast you away from their vision.

[00:45:00] Yeah.

[00:45:01] And then like their horses are the ones that seeing you.

[00:45:03] I don't know.

[00:45:05] I feel like they should have better perception of the ring.

[00:45:10] Like they're being drawn to the ring.

[00:45:11] That's a great point.

[00:45:12] But they seem a little just like being led by the horses in a way.

[00:45:19] Yeah.

[00:45:19] Or like the fact that you can just have like a fire and like that protects you.

[00:45:23] Yeah, exactly.

[00:45:23] Yeah.

[00:45:24] Like mediocre.

[00:45:26] That is too.

[00:45:27] Why I kind of like the movies representation of that, because it seemed like they had a

[00:45:31] fire and they were protected from these things.

[00:45:33] Whereas like Aragorn comes in, like throwing fire around and like he throws the fire through

[00:45:37] the things like head and then he's good.

[00:45:39] You know, I like that he puts up a more significant fight in the, in the books.

[00:45:45] This there's like more of a magic feel to it.

[00:45:48] Like even traveling on the road versus not traveling on the road.

[00:45:50] I'm like, I know logically why they're doing that.

[00:45:53] There also feels like there's some sort of magic embedded in all of this, which I like

[00:45:57] and don't like at the same time.

[00:45:59] Like I like that it's more magical, but also I feel like sometimes it can be a crutch or

[00:46:02] an excuse.

[00:46:03] Like I'm, I hope that it doesn't come down to it in a few and like the rest of the whole

[00:46:08] series where it's like, oh, they can't do this because of the magic.

[00:46:11] I'm like, I remember when I watched the movie for the first time, I was so annoyed

[00:46:17] by that with the ring raids.

[00:46:18] I was like, why are they like, they should just be able to persist through anything.

[00:46:21] Like they should not ever be scared away.

[00:46:24] And yeah, I just didn't really ever understand that.

[00:46:27] Like, yeah, I think they should be more invincible than they are.

[00:46:32] If they're dead already.

[00:46:34] Yeah.

[00:46:34] I'll actually get it with you.

[00:46:35] Like, yeah, they're dead already.

[00:46:36] So what the heck is a Wraith?

[00:46:40] Oh crap.

[00:46:40] Also, what does what look like?

[00:46:44] No, like I, I can't.

[00:46:46] You're saying on the front cover that guy.

[00:46:49] Sure.

[00:46:50] What are the Wraiths?

[00:46:51] What are you saying?

[00:46:52] Or you want an explanation?

[00:46:54] No.

[00:46:55] You're going to Google them, aren't you?

[00:46:56] Also, I have to say this because I thought this is a really, really cool fact.

[00:46:59] Someone commented on our YouTube, Jonas, and they said, no spoiler, just some background.

[00:47:04] The barrows the hobbits encounter are the graves of forgotten kings of Anor or Anor.

[00:47:11] That is one of the two kingdoms the Numenoreans built after their island of Numenor was destroyed.

[00:47:18] Gondor in the south and Anor in the north.

[00:47:20] Anor fell into ruin after constant war against the northern kingdom of Angmar.

[00:47:25] Although Anor lost the war as the swords of the kings of Anor are said to be very efficient in killing people from Angmar and might come in handy later for at least one of the four hobbits.

[00:47:36] Whoa.

[00:47:37] I have like little facts like that.

[00:47:38] That's awesome.

[00:47:39] I love that stuff.

[00:47:39] So I didn't like, I mean, obviously we don't know this, but those were like the graves of this old kingdom of men.

[00:47:44] I think I thought a fact like that was so fascinating.

[00:47:48] So cool.

[00:47:49] Like anytime you guys have stuff like that, that's not spoiler.

[00:47:52] Obviously let us know.

[00:47:53] Cause I will soak all that up.

[00:47:54] I love it.

[00:47:56] But, uh, yeah, that's why I was trying to think of what the heck the barrows are and then what the heck the, uh, um, race are.

[00:48:10] And the depiction in the movies, like there's a line in the movies where.

[00:48:15] Um, I think Strider, they had, they had just meet in Strider or who, who would they talk to where he goes?

[00:48:23] They are neither living nor dead.

[00:48:25] Oh, they always like feed on the presence of the ring or they always feel it.

[00:48:28] I think maybe Gandalf says that in the movies.

[00:48:33] I want to.

[00:48:34] She's trying to find spoilers right now.

[00:48:36] I'm not trying to find spoilers.

[00:48:37] I like to have a better understanding cause I feel like I'm lost and you guys are going on and on about it.

[00:48:42] Well, that's partly cause we love talking about all this stuff.

[00:48:45] No, it's fine.

[00:48:45] Cause that's the point, but I'm lost.

[00:48:48] So.

[00:48:53] Uh, what are you looking up though?

[00:48:55] Uh, she wants to know what ring rates look like.

[00:48:57] Hard to picture that.

[00:48:58] Yeah.

[00:48:59] Well, which is a fascinating question.

[00:49:00] What the heck is a wraith?

[00:49:02] Hmm.

[00:49:04] Like my.

[00:49:04] And also I'm like, has that word been used or do we just know that's what they are or they don't get called up till later?

[00:49:10] It's really funny.

[00:49:11] And even when we just Googled it, they're called Nazgul.

[00:49:13] You guys have never read the book, but the way you're talking about the movie is so detailed that I'm like clueless.

[00:49:19] Yeah.

[00:49:19] Sorry.

[00:49:20] I think it's insane wraith.

[00:49:21] Maybe we should have done a movie watch with you first.

[00:49:22] It must've at some point, right?

[00:49:24] What?

[00:49:24] Um, maybe we just know them as black riders right now, but they do go by many names.

[00:49:30] I thought it said they were wraiths.

[00:49:33] A ghost or ghost like image of someone.

[00:49:35] Let me just do a search on the book.

[00:49:39] Command F.

[00:49:41] Yep.

[00:49:42] Ooh.

[00:49:43] The exact likeness of a living person.

[00:49:46] Don't read things.

[00:49:47] Why?

[00:49:47] I'm not going to read that loud.

[00:49:48] Okay.

[00:49:49] So it does.

[00:49:49] It comes up in shadow of the past where we have long ago, they fell under the dominion

[00:49:54] of the one and they became ring wraiths shadows under his great shadow, his most terrible servants.

[00:50:02] Long ago, uh, it is many a year since the nine walked abroad yet.

[00:50:07] Who knows?

[00:50:07] As the shadow grows once more, they too, they too may walk again.

[00:50:11] This is the nine rings of power.

[00:50:13] Is that what you're saying?

[00:50:15] Yeah.

[00:50:15] We will not speak of such things.

[00:50:17] Thought you weren't finding spoilers.

[00:50:18] Even in the morning.

[00:50:19] He just said it and I just repeated it.

[00:50:21] No, that's a, it's a, that's a, yeah.

[00:50:23] So that's, that's, this is definitely the nine.

[00:50:25] Oh, so like the nine men who fell, but what is this?

[00:50:31] What is this line though?

[00:50:32] As the shadow grows once more, they too may walk again.

[00:50:37] Like it gets more evil.

[00:50:39] Well, I was walking.

[00:50:40] Yeah.

[00:50:41] I don't know.

[00:50:41] Wait, where's that line being pulled from?

[00:50:43] Because that sounds like in, they didn't exist for a long time, but now that evil is

[00:50:48] growing, they're walking again.

[00:50:50] That was in shadow of the past when they, when like Gandalf and Frodo are doing the rehash

[00:50:55] of everything.

[00:50:56] Yeah.

[00:50:56] Yeah.

[00:50:56] Okay.

[00:50:56] That's what you said, Jenna.

[00:50:58] Thank you.

[00:50:59] I thought there were five of them.

[00:51:02] There's nine of them.

[00:51:04] Um, no, I think we only know, only see five of them at the moment.

[00:51:07] Right.

[00:51:08] I couldn't tell if they all made it to the river at the end.

[00:51:10] But you're talking about people.

[00:51:13] What are you guys?

[00:51:14] Um, the race with the black riders.

[00:51:18] So whenever we say ring rate or black rider, or Nazgul, which we won't say, we're talking

[00:51:25] about these black riders that are chasing them as being nine total, but five and sometimes

[00:51:34] only two, but it's all interchangeable.

[00:51:37] Black riders, ring rates, et cetera.

[00:51:42] I, yeah, again, we're going to like, you know, movies versus books.

[00:51:47] It's well, we won't get there yet.

[00:51:48] Maybe the next chapter, but yeah, I don't know how many arrived at the river versus

[00:51:51] not.

[00:51:52] I thought it was five there that like there's five of them at wither top.

[00:51:55] Not all nine of them.

[00:51:56] Hmm.

[00:51:57] Yeah.

[00:51:58] Pretty sure about that one.

[00:51:59] Maybe there's only three, two, because I think they break off it, but it does seem

[00:52:03] to like they are more plotting and sinister.

[00:52:06] Like they're, they're figuring things out rather than like there's five at wither top,

[00:52:12] but then there's three at the, what's his name?

[00:52:18] Fatty's.

[00:52:18] Fatty's.

[00:52:19] Yeah.

[00:52:19] So that could be the nine.

[00:52:21] Right.

[00:52:21] Right.

[00:52:22] That's where the other three were.

[00:52:24] Yeah.

[00:52:24] And then there's one lone one.

[00:52:25] Just they all planned at the same time.

[00:52:28] Love that.

[00:52:29] To ambush all possible ring bearers.

[00:52:32] So true.

[00:52:34] Anybody who could potentially be a ring bearer.

[00:52:35] Let's take them out.

[00:52:36] It said that there was no sign of another living thing, except some birds and except one

[00:52:42] fox.

[00:52:43] Fox.

[00:52:43] So I'm gonna have a Fox theory that's going to keep going because we know foxes can think

[00:52:47] and register hobbits.

[00:52:49] So, uh, anyways, um, that's what it said.

[00:52:53] The birds are spies aren't to be trusted.

[00:52:55] There's like worse spies than that.

[00:52:57] Yeah.

[00:52:58] Who are the worst spies?

[00:52:59] I know.

[00:53:00] I love that.

[00:53:01] Um, do you think Fatty Bulger is dead?

[00:53:04] No, no, I don't think he's dead.

[00:53:06] Okay.

[00:53:07] Wouldn't surprise me if he was though.

[00:53:09] Yeah.

[00:53:10] I hope he's not.

[00:53:11] I would be surprised he was dead.

[00:53:12] You'd be surprised if he was dead.

[00:53:14] All right.

[00:53:14] I feel like he's cause that's when they all like alerted the whole town that I feel like

[00:53:19] he survived that.

[00:53:20] Cause I thought they just fleed after they heard the horns blowing.

[00:53:25] So I feel like he's just hiding.

[00:53:26] Oh yeah, you're right.

[00:53:27] Cause he said that they, they ran down the gate people.

[00:53:29] Does that mean they killed the gate people on the way out?

[00:53:32] Yeah, maybe.

[00:53:32] I don't know.

[00:53:33] Um, so that wouldn't mean he kind of survived that.

[00:53:36] I would think he's just going to be like in hiding now.

[00:53:40] Or maybe not.

[00:53:41] Maybe now that they know he doesn't have it.

[00:53:43] Now he's safe.

[00:53:44] Yeah.

[00:53:44] That could be, but I don't know.

[00:53:45] To me, the depiction is like he runs away at this house and then turns around and

[00:53:48] saying like, Oh, I don't have it.

[00:53:50] Meaning like there is probably someone chasing him maybe with a sword on him.

[00:53:54] And he said, I don't have it.

[00:53:56] And they just dispose of them right there.

[00:53:57] Cause it was to one of them that he was saying it as he landed at the house.

[00:54:01] But maybe he got inside and they didn't want to go inside.

[00:54:04] Cause they didn't have a wall.

[00:54:05] I feel like it's just protected and measured and just yell.

[00:54:06] I don't have it.

[00:54:07] Yeah, it's true.

[00:54:08] It's true.

[00:54:09] But yeah, that, so maybe this is a discussion of what character qualities the

[00:54:15] Wraiths have.

[00:54:16] Would they show compassion in any sense like that?

[00:54:19] I don't think so, but maybe they would.

[00:54:22] Yeah.

[00:54:22] Yeah.

[00:54:22] You know, the way it says it there, it was some time before anyone could make out what

[00:54:27] he was babbling about.

[00:54:28] So he's like talking to other local people and then they get the idea that there were

[00:54:34] enemies, some strange invasion from the old forest.

[00:54:38] Then they lost no more time.

[00:54:39] They blew the horn.

[00:54:40] So I kind of, it felt like he made it to other people and he was safe.

[00:54:44] And then they were like, all right, let's get these dudes out of here.

[00:54:47] Also kind of felt like they were a little ready to fight.

[00:54:49] They were like, Oh yeah.

[00:54:50] Is it battle time?

[00:54:51] We're doing this.

[00:54:52] Um, which was kind of surprising.

[00:54:54] Yeah.

[00:54:55] Jen, did the race look in your head like they do in the, in the image that you saw?

[00:55:00] Um, they're scarier in the pan.

[00:55:02] Okay.

[00:55:03] It's true.

[00:55:04] Indeed.

[00:55:05] Yeah.

[00:55:05] Yeah.

[00:55:07] But now, now I know what they look like.

[00:55:09] I remember, but it's funny since I've seen the movies, a lot of people have dressed

[00:55:14] up as them and I didn't know what that was until now.

[00:55:18] Whoa.

[00:55:18] It's like that's a creepy.

[00:55:19] That's a creepy thing to dress up as.

[00:55:21] Intense costume.

[00:55:21] Yeah.

[00:55:22] You get nine friends and you can dress up as a bunch of wraiths.

[00:55:25] Yeah.

[00:55:26] That's so crazy.

[00:55:27] Do they kill people though?

[00:55:30] Or are they only looking for the ring?

[00:55:32] I was not under the impression that they were like going to kill anyone.

[00:55:35] I mean, well, maybe that's a crazy statement, but I don't know.

[00:55:40] Like, do they just want the ring and then they'll leave?

[00:55:42] Or like killing people in their pack.

[00:55:44] Cause there's like really no way of knowing if they actually do want to kill.

[00:55:48] Cause they didn't kill Frodo, but are they aiming to kill?

[00:55:52] Like, you know, I think cause the blade that he was stabbed with was going to turn

[00:55:58] him into a wraith like them.

[00:56:00] Correct?

[00:56:01] I don't know.

[00:56:02] Wow.

[00:56:03] Then that's foreshadowing.

[00:56:04] Was that a thing already?

[00:56:05] Spoiler?

[00:56:05] Because earlier in the chapter, he says he's getting thin and it will go on indefinitely

[00:56:10] or I shall become a wraith.

[00:56:12] Yeah.

[00:56:12] So wow, by the end of the chapter.

[00:56:14] That's one thing I like about book Aragorn is he's like, stop joking around about it.

[00:56:17] Yeah, yeah.

[00:56:17] Don't say that.

[00:56:18] I think that's fun.

[00:56:19] Cause in the, in the movies you're a little more cocky about it.

[00:56:23] So true.

[00:56:24] Fully agree there.

[00:56:26] Yeah.

[00:56:26] Hmm.

[00:56:27] But it is weird that it feels like the name power is real.

[00:56:30] Remember the dream Frodo had like?

[00:56:32] Yeah.

[00:56:33] Which one?

[00:56:34] Oh, he just had one.

[00:56:36] Yeah.

[00:56:36] No, he had three at least.

[00:56:38] So which one?

[00:56:39] Then he has a dream cut.

[00:56:41] Well, you can read my mind then.

[00:56:45] Because I only remember one.

[00:56:47] So describe it.

[00:56:48] Talked about it.

[00:56:48] I don't know about him dying or something.

[00:56:50] It was like foreshadowing something.

[00:56:52] About Frodo dying.

[00:56:54] Cause I don't remember the specific dreams except the one felt like it was Gandalf on top

[00:56:59] of a tower.

[00:57:00] Then there was one.

[00:57:01] The one we discussed for like a while.

[00:57:03] I feel like we discussed them all.

[00:57:05] Okay.

[00:57:05] Nevermind.

[00:57:06] Um.

[00:57:07] Just kidding.

[00:57:08] Keep going.

[00:57:08] Keep going.

[00:57:08] I'm dying.

[00:57:09] Hmm.

[00:57:10] Well, it could have been this that he was seeing.

[00:57:14] Getting a little mini prophecy about it.

[00:57:16] Hmm.

[00:57:17] Um.

[00:57:17] Also in the movies, it was at the top of Weathertop.

[00:57:20] Yeah.

[00:57:20] Um.

[00:57:21] So it does feel funny now.

[00:57:23] It just feels like they're just like down by a creek.

[00:57:25] So a little less, uh.

[00:57:26] Dramatic.

[00:57:27] Dramatic.

[00:57:28] But it's good.

[00:57:29] More realistic, I guess.

[00:57:31] Um.

[00:57:34] It is interesting too.

[00:57:35] Um.

[00:57:36] How much.

[00:57:39] How much time passes between when Frodo puts the ring on and between when he gets stabbed?

[00:57:45] Because that was a weird section.

[00:57:47] I couldn't quite figure that out in the books.

[00:57:48] Mm-hmm.

[00:57:48] Like it almost seemed like he puts the, he like sees this wraith from a distance.

[00:57:52] He puts the ring on and he's like right next to it.

[00:57:54] Yeah.

[00:57:54] That's exactly how I read it.

[00:57:55] Yeah.

[00:57:55] It was almost like he just like boom, just shot across the river.

[00:57:58] Yeah.

[00:57:58] And then the other guys didn't even see him move.

[00:58:01] Yeah.

[00:58:01] They couldn't find him.

[00:58:02] Yeah.

[00:58:02] He just.

[00:58:03] Full flick flew across in a mist or whatever.

[00:58:06] Who flew across?

[00:58:07] I don't know.

[00:58:07] One of these ringwraiths.

[00:58:09] Yeah.

[00:58:09] So to me it was like a Dementor like all of a sudden.

[00:58:12] Yeah.

[00:58:12] Yeah.

[00:58:12] But it felt like it was like the other hobbits didn't even notice.

[00:58:16] They just felt maybe Dementor vibes of like something dark just approached but we didn't

[00:58:22] see anything.

[00:58:22] There's a scene in the movie though cause I thought I remembered that.

[00:58:26] Yeah.

[00:58:26] It's like a legendary scene too because like the wraith takes out his sword and like does

[00:58:31] a walk and looks like you know Snape with his like cloak billowing and then he stabs

[00:58:35] Frodo and then Frodo takes off the ring and starts screaming but it's like it's still

[00:58:39] dramatic but it's like less mystical than this.

[00:58:43] Yeah.

[00:58:43] They feel so physical.

[00:58:45] Yeah.

[00:58:45] Like you can fight them.

[00:58:46] You can use your swords.

[00:58:48] It feels like a battle.

[00:58:49] But in this it was like it feels like they couldn't have done anything without

[00:58:52] fire.

[00:58:54] But in the movies it feels like Aragorn comes out with his sword and a torch and they're

[00:58:59] battling.

[00:59:00] Yeah.

[00:59:01] But at the same point like again the movies like the movies are never going to you know

[00:59:05] match up perfectly to the books but the movies do have a good depiction of how they

[00:59:09] are both human and not.

[00:59:11] Yeah.

[00:59:11] Because Aragorn throws a flaming torch through one of their heads.

[00:59:16] Like it just goes right there.

[00:59:18] Yep.

[00:59:18] Okay.

[00:59:19] They're definitely not human.

[00:59:20] They're not like physical in any way anyway.

[00:59:23] So like this again I like the books depiction because it's not giving me a better understanding

[00:59:29] of it but it's like painting a different picture in my mind of it which is like helping me see

[00:59:33] it for the first time again because I just don't know like the magical aspect of this story

[00:59:40] like did Frodo really get transported across time did time freeze when he put on the ring

[00:59:46] and the race.

[00:59:47] Like there's there's like a lot of random questions I have about like the but did he

[00:59:51] disappear to his friends and yeah so I think so they didn't see the ring.

[00:59:57] I got the impression he was like behind them and they didn't really notice what he

[01:00:00] was doing.

[01:00:01] Yeah.

[01:00:01] Yeah.

[01:00:01] And it all happened really quick.

[01:00:02] Oh.

[01:00:03] But I'm not sure.

[01:00:04] I don't know the audio books really working for me.

[01:00:07] Hmm.

[01:00:07] But this honestly this all happens really fast so I feel like it's supposed to be a bit

[01:00:11] of a blur.

[01:00:12] Yeah.

[01:00:12] And just like they barely know what happened and then you're catching up after the battle.

[01:00:17] Yeah.

[01:00:18] And then Aragorn comes back and then they explain it they're like oh what's going on.

[01:00:21] Oh no.

[01:00:22] And Nemo is giving us consolation he says there's too much in the books to keep count of on a

[01:00:25] first read so don't worry.

[01:00:27] That's kind of true.

[01:00:28] I'm even like reading this really pretty diligently online like there's way more like

[01:00:32] this isn't just like a story it's like I feel like every paragraph has like an added

[01:00:37] story attached to it.

[01:00:38] Yep.

[01:00:39] Um and it's it can be a little overwhelming.

[01:00:41] I'm tuning in and out of it also because some parts are boring for me so that's not helping.

[01:00:46] That's fair.

[01:00:48] And then the action happens and I'm like oh yeah.

[01:00:50] Yeah.

[01:00:51] Focus.

[01:00:51] Let me get back in.

[01:00:53] Do not speak that name so loudly.

[01:00:56] Can't even say Mordor around here.

[01:00:58] Yeah.

[01:00:58] Wow.

[01:00:59] Wow there's a lot of parallels.

[01:01:01] Yeah.

[01:01:01] Between Harry Potter's.

[01:01:05] Isn't that a whole thing that she ripped off the Lord of the Rings for everything.

[01:01:09] Some of it.

[01:01:10] Harry Potter.

[01:01:11] Could be.

[01:01:11] I think so but I don't think I don't think everything I think obviously she had differences.

[01:01:16] But uh yeah a lot of people talk about how she ripped off certain things.

[01:01:20] She ripped off.

[01:01:22] Which I mean like you know good artist copy great artist steal.

[01:01:24] There's nothing new under the sun right.

[01:01:27] Exactly.

[01:01:28] Exactly.

[01:01:29] Exactly.

[01:01:31] Um what do you guys think about the Baron and uh Tani Vial story or the other way to

[01:01:36] say Luthan I think is the same name.

[01:01:41] That one lost me a little bit there was like that was it was there was so much information

[01:01:46] in that that I got lost.

[01:01:47] Yeah I think I gave up.

[01:01:48] Yeah.

[01:01:49] Like he's telling this tale and I'm like he's telling the whole their whole life story.

[01:01:54] And I felt a little overwhelmed with that one.

[01:01:59] Because in the movies I think the most important thing which I was talking to again I was talking

[01:02:05] to Nemo about this.

[01:02:05] I think this is the one section in the movies where it's in the extended edition when they're

[01:02:10] in the bog.

[01:02:11] Eregoran comes back with that deer and he's singing the song in Elvish.

[01:02:15] And then Frodo goes you're singing the song about a woman or something like that or something.

[01:02:19] He says something.

[01:02:20] And he goes yeah I'm singing of this woman who gave her love to a mortal man.

[01:02:25] And it's supposed to be like I guess it's supposed to be like a microcosm of his and

[01:02:29] Arwen's relationship.

[01:02:30] Right right.

[01:02:31] In the movies especially but I'm curious what else is going to be attached to that in

[01:02:34] the books because I think there's like maybe more to that.

[01:02:37] Um but maybe I'm wrong.

[01:02:39] Well and it's funny that our question in the last chunk was how come Elrond is Elrond

[01:02:45] half Elven and now we have our answer.

[01:02:47] Yeah.

[01:02:48] That he was Elrond of Rivendell is of that kin.

[01:02:52] Mm hmm.

[01:02:53] And I'm curious too because there's like high elves and I guess not high elves low elves or

[01:03:00] something like that.

[01:03:01] Um.

[01:03:02] Cause we have a who what was his name Glorfindel.

[01:03:07] Glorfindel yeah.

[01:03:08] Yeah.

[01:03:08] Who comes in the next chapter and like rescues them.

[01:03:10] But like.

[01:03:12] Elves are weird to me.

[01:03:15] Uh cause I was trying to get a different depiction of who they are in my mind cause like in the

[01:03:18] movies they're like too high and mighty for everyone else.

[01:03:21] And even in the show they're like too high and mighty for everyone else.

[01:03:24] And then when we met the first what was his what was the first elf's name?

[01:03:27] Why can't I think of it?

[01:03:28] They met him in the woods.

[01:03:29] It was another G.

[01:03:30] Elf names are not mine.

[01:03:33] Gildor.

[01:03:33] Yeah.

[01:03:34] Gildor I think.

[01:03:34] Something like that.

[01:03:35] Yeah.

[01:03:35] He seemed a bit more down to earth and even though he was like kind of ethereal and like

[01:03:39] wasn't giving them perfect answers.

[01:03:40] He seemed like a normal dude which I love.

[01:03:43] Yeah.

[01:03:43] I was like okay.

[01:03:44] Oh those are like more normal than they are ethereal.

[01:03:46] And then all of a sudden Glorfindel comes in and he's like this grand sweeping person

[01:03:52] who is like blonde and is like way higher and mightier than everyone else.

[01:03:56] And I'm like oh gosh here we go.

[01:03:58] And I was like wait is it saying he could drive off all of the black riders by himself?

[01:04:04] I was like who is this dude?

[01:04:06] Yeah I know.

[01:04:07] Um.

[01:04:09] I know what are Silmarils?

[01:04:10] Then I was like yeah Silmarils are jewels or something.

[01:04:14] I think that the jewels of the elves.

[01:04:15] And then it was one of the three.

[01:04:17] The highest or something like that.

[01:04:17] And I was like now I feel like there's all.

[01:04:19] Again like you're saying every time you get something it's a paragraph you could have

[01:04:23] a whole story on and then sure enough there's a whole book about them.

[01:04:26] Exactly.

[01:04:26] Um.

[01:04:27] So yeah.

[01:04:28] Again this is it's kind of this whole series is kind of fun too because like it's less

[01:04:35] of an encapsulate.

[01:04:36] It is still an encapsulated story but there's like so much other stuff attached to this.

[01:04:40] Like I think you could tell he built out this whole world before he like really wrote Lord

[01:04:45] of the Rings.

[01:04:46] Yeah.

[01:04:46] Whereas like rolling was like I have a good story and I'll write the story and then build

[01:04:51] out the world out after that.

[01:04:53] So like there's not like the story is more compact I think in that.

[01:04:57] Whereas this one I'm like there's you just randomly mentioned the Silmarils like I'm supposed

[01:05:02] to know what you're talking about.

[01:05:04] Yep.

[01:05:04] And like okay.

[01:05:05] You got to go to you know the appendices and do my research with that and figure out

[01:05:09] who Baron and Luthien are and what all these poems that they're reciting what they mean.

[01:05:15] Yep.

[01:05:16] There's a lot attached to it which is fun.

[01:05:19] Um but then yeah let's go to the next chapter unless you had anything else in chapter 11.

[01:05:23] The last one.

[01:05:27] Um.

[01:05:28] Nope.

[01:05:28] Anytime I say that I'm just like we're all just looking at it.

[01:05:31] What else did you have underlined anything.

[01:05:34] Nope.

[01:05:34] That's it.

[01:05:35] It's good.

[01:05:35] Nothing else important.

[01:05:37] Yeah.

[01:05:38] So chapter 12 is flight to the forward.

[01:05:40] What is this chapter about.

[01:05:42] Frodo wakes up from the stabbing and then they have kind of a long journey to Rivendell

[01:05:46] and uh Asphaloth is an Asphal boss and the river sweeps the black riders away Glorfindel

[01:05:57] helps them.

[01:05:58] Yeah.

[01:05:58] Love that good.

[01:05:59] So yeah.

[01:06:01] That was a great summary.

[01:06:04] Um.

[01:06:06] It was.

[01:06:07] Oh I wrote that in the movies.

[01:06:09] Um.

[01:06:09] They felt more tangible.

[01:06:12] And I wondered if nine of them were here as they were fighting the crew.

[01:06:18] I couldn't remember if there were nine in the movies but it felt like there were.

[01:06:23] But then I thought maybe I just don't remember.

[01:06:25] Maybe it was only five in the movies too.

[01:06:27] Um.

[01:06:58] Um.

[01:07:00] It just like makes sense for the continuity of the movies like how to introduce.

[01:07:03] Yeah.

[01:07:04] Yeah.

[01:07:04] Right.

[01:07:04] And then they go straight into Rivendell but I was kind of like.

[01:07:07] I don't know.

[01:07:08] I wanted it to be here in the book too.

[01:07:14] Yeah.

[01:07:15] I'm just gonna watch the movies.

[01:07:17] And then I'll be.

[01:07:17] You've already watched the movies.

[01:07:18] We can watch the first.

[01:07:19] We've essentially described every scene from the movie so far.

[01:07:22] Yep.

[01:07:23] It's all pictured in Jen's mind.

[01:07:25] She's like okay.

[01:07:25] Yeah.

[01:07:27] Yeah.

[01:07:27] This is one of those scenes where I actually much prefer the uh.

[01:07:30] The movie over the book.

[01:07:31] Maybe the first one that I significantly prefer the movie over the book.

[01:07:34] Hmm.

[01:07:35] Maybe cause I just don't like Glorfindel all that much.

[01:07:38] That's so funny.

[01:07:39] Cause he was just kind of annoying to me.

[01:07:40] Nemo talked about him being a giga chad.

[01:07:43] Giga chad Glorfindel.

[01:07:44] Like this just like beefed up dude.

[01:07:47] Um.

[01:07:48] So.

[01:07:49] I.

[01:07:49] I like the introduction of Arwen that we get in the movies.

[01:07:53] Um.

[01:07:53] I like how.

[01:07:55] I actually like how they split up.

[01:07:58] And like she's a faster rider than Aragorn is.

[01:08:01] In this they like stick together.

[01:08:02] And like it even talks about how you know they're gonna go and he's gonna like help them along the way.

[01:08:06] But they like rest for a short period of time and they all get up and they go.

[01:08:09] I like the idea that even if they had Glorfindel come take Frodo.

[01:08:14] And like rush Frodo.

[01:08:16] Cause there was like significant emergency behind this in the movies.

[01:08:19] Oh yeah.

[01:08:20] In the books I felt a little bit more relaxed.

[01:08:22] So true.

[01:08:23] 12 days it was taking them?

[01:08:24] Yeah 12 days which is crazy.

[01:08:26] Crazy.

[01:08:26] Which maybe makes sense.

[01:08:28] In that this thing is like a slow poison.

[01:08:30] It slowly transitions him into uh Miss Wraith.

[01:08:33] But uh.

[01:08:34] I don't know.

[01:08:35] The movies had just immediacy to it.

[01:08:36] I guess just cause the action.

[01:08:38] You have to have that in a movie.

[01:08:39] You can't have a 12 day journey to Rubenzo.

[01:08:41] Oh that's when she's bringing Frodo you're saying.

[01:08:43] Yeah.

[01:08:45] I do.

[01:08:46] Kinda.

[01:08:46] Kinda right.

[01:08:48] So just substitute Glorfindel with Arwen and that's the movies.

[01:08:52] I don't know who this guy is.

[01:08:54] Yeah we don't either.

[01:08:56] In the movies?

[01:08:57] He's not in the movies?

[01:08:57] No.

[01:08:58] This is one of those characters who's not in the movie at all.

[01:09:00] If he is he's not by name.

[01:09:02] Yeah.

[01:09:02] Like he could be somewhere in the background.

[01:09:04] Yeah.

[01:09:04] I did think it was interesting that um.

[01:09:07] Aragorn is explaining the stabbing a little bit.

[01:09:09] And they find a little cloak I think.

[01:09:11] And he says uh.

[01:09:13] More deadly to him was the name of Elbereth.

[01:09:17] So I like that.

[01:09:19] Aragorn is scared to say Mordor.

[01:09:21] But knows that good words have power as well.

[01:09:24] So it's kind of like that Voldemort thing.

[01:09:27] Where you you don't want to speak the bad.

[01:09:29] But I like that there is power in speaking good.

[01:09:33] Yeah.

[01:09:33] So it brings a little more balance to that idea.

[01:09:36] Um.

[01:09:37] They're like manifesting right now.

[01:09:39] Yeah.

[01:09:39] Yeah.

[01:09:41] So just felt quicker in the movies I wrote.

[01:09:44] Yeah.

[01:09:45] Yeah it definitely did.

[01:09:46] And uh.

[01:09:47] Again even like the chase scene in the movies.

[01:09:50] And then like the ringwraiths are chasing them.

[01:09:52] You kind of have like.

[01:09:54] Again it's more obviously more realistic in the books.

[01:09:57] Because like they're on this journey.

[01:09:58] And the wraiths are kind of behind them.

[01:10:00] They're like tracking them.

[01:10:01] And they have to like stay ahead of them.

[01:10:03] And like you know cover their tracks and everything like that.

[01:10:06] And I like how they finally get across the river.

[01:10:08] And the race finally catch up to them.

[01:10:10] And like they get swept away.

[01:10:12] Um.

[01:10:14] But I don't know.

[01:10:16] Uh.

[01:10:16] They found the trolls from the hobbit.

[01:10:18] Yeah.

[01:10:19] I love that.

[01:10:19] And I love that it felt so like intriguing to them all.

[01:10:22] Yeah.

[01:10:22] Because they had heard the stories.

[01:10:24] I think it was Pippin or Mary who said.

[01:10:26] They only half ever believed them.

[01:10:28] Yeah.

[01:10:28] So to see it it was like confirming.

[01:10:30] I thought that was cool.

[01:10:31] This to me felt like uh.

[01:10:32] I hate when movies do like Easter eggs for other movies that they're in.

[01:10:36] But this one like is a cool one.

[01:10:37] Yeah.

[01:10:37] Like within Tolkien's writing.

[01:10:38] He's like throwing Easter eggs in there.

[01:10:40] He's like you guys read the hobbit right?

[01:10:41] You remember that scene?

[01:10:43] Yeah.

[01:10:44] Nope.

[01:10:45] Yeah.

[01:10:46] Yeah.

[01:10:47] No.

[01:10:48] This is like.

[01:10:49] This is one of my favorite chapters in the hobbit.

[01:10:51] When.

[01:10:52] So in the hobbit.

[01:10:54] Uh.

[01:10:54] Bilbo is with all these dwarves.

[01:10:56] And they get captured by these three mountain trolls.

[01:10:58] And these mountain trolls are.

[01:11:01] Uh.

[01:11:02] About to cook them and eat them.

[01:11:04] And then.

[01:11:05] Bilbo has this brilliant idea where he just keeps acting like a troll.

[01:11:09] And like shouts out a different way to cook them.

[01:11:11] Because they're all debating on how they're going to cook them.

[01:11:13] They finally settle on it.

[01:11:14] They're like okay we're going to cook them by.

[01:11:16] Roasting them over the fire.

[01:11:18] And then Bilbo's like no no no.

[01:11:19] You should squash us.

[01:11:20] Squash us in the jelly.

[01:11:22] And the trolls get in a huge fight again.

[01:11:23] And they debate for like an hour.

[01:11:25] I forgot that's how it is.

[01:11:25] About like how they should actually.

[01:11:26] Uh.

[01:11:27] How they should actually cook them.

[01:11:28] And then they.

[01:11:29] As soon as they come upon another one.

[01:11:30] Bilbo's like no no no no.

[01:11:31] You want to like.

[01:11:33] You know.

[01:11:33] Beat us and like.

[01:11:35] Scrape us like butter over bread.

[01:11:36] Or something like that.

[01:11:37] He says like.

[01:11:37] And he just keeps doing that.

[01:11:39] Until the sunlight finally comes up.

[01:11:41] And trolls can't live in the sunlight.

[01:11:43] And then the sunlight turns them into rocks.

[01:11:45] And that's how they all get out of it.

[01:11:47] Oh.

[01:11:47] It's a fun chapter.

[01:11:48] It's like an exciting chapter.

[01:11:49] And so this is where they're coming up to that again.

[01:11:51] Where they see like.

[01:11:52] Oh.

[01:11:53] This.

[01:11:53] And exactly what you said.

[01:11:54] They didn't really believe Bilbo when he was telling these stories.

[01:11:57] And then they actually like.

[01:11:59] Have these confirmed with these trolls that are just sitting there.

[01:12:02] Wow.

[01:12:02] Which I think is fun too.

[01:12:03] Because I'm sure they didn't believe Bilbo on a lot of his stories.

[01:12:05] Because a lot of his stories are out there.

[01:12:07] Hmm.

[01:12:08] But.

[01:12:09] But if this one is true.

[01:12:10] I know.

[01:12:11] And they're like.

[01:12:11] Maybe the rest are.

[01:12:12] Yeah.

[01:12:13] Is there a scene in the Hobbit movie where they're all in like.

[01:12:18] Barrels.

[01:12:19] And they're like floating.

[01:12:20] On a river.

[01:12:20] I think that's like the only thing I remember from the movie.

[01:12:25] Is that.

[01:12:25] Are they leaving Bilbo?

[01:12:27] No.

[01:12:28] They're leaving a different Elven kingdom.

[01:12:30] They're leaving the kingdom of the Wood Elves.

[01:12:32] And Mirkwood.

[01:12:34] Hmm.

[01:12:34] And the Mirkwood Elves aren't the nicest elves.

[01:12:36] I think that's actually where Legolas is from.

[01:12:38] I was just going to say.

[01:12:39] He was a Wood Elf.

[01:12:39] Right?

[01:12:39] I don't know if they're more than one.

[01:12:41] Yeah.

[01:12:42] They're like the mean variety.

[01:12:43] They're the nasty variety.

[01:12:45] Jen just loves being in fun of this.

[01:12:48] No.

[01:12:49] I just.

[01:12:49] I don't know how.

[01:12:50] It's just your memory.

[01:12:53] And I see this too as like one of those things.

[01:12:55] If you're like playing a video game.

[01:12:56] Like an open world.

[01:12:57] This is definitely one of those things like.

[01:12:59] Oh you found this.

[01:12:59] And it's like.

[01:13:00] Oh you found.

[01:13:01] So and so.

[01:13:02] The trolls.

[01:13:03] Of the mountain.

[01:13:03] And like this is like a.

[01:13:05] And it gives you all the information about them.

[01:13:07] But it's like you know.

[01:13:07] One of those hidden gems in a video game.

[01:13:09] Oh yeah.

[01:13:10] Um.

[01:13:11] I'm loving their horse.

[01:13:13] The poor old pony from Bill Ferny.

[01:13:16] Um.

[01:13:16] Because it has an unexpected talent for picking out a path.

[01:13:20] And for sparing its rider as many jolts as possible.

[01:13:23] That's cute.

[01:13:24] What a sweet horse.

[01:13:24] I know.

[01:13:25] Great.

[01:13:26] And.

[01:13:27] I like that they were going to be.

[01:13:29] They were kind of suspicious of this horse as well.

[01:13:32] Yep.

[01:13:32] Because they thought.

[01:13:33] Like is he going to go back?

[01:13:34] Yeah I know.

[01:13:35] And then all of a sudden it turns out to be this great horse.

[01:13:38] And it's getting stronger with each day it's not with Bill Ferny.

[01:13:41] So they're like.

[01:13:42] Oh this is great.

[01:13:43] It must have been so badly treated.

[01:13:44] Yeah I know.

[01:13:44] I love that.

[01:13:44] To gain weight on this journey.

[01:13:46] Yeah I know.

[01:13:47] On this journey of all places.

[01:13:48] Poor guy.

[01:13:49] Because Eric Warren even has that line where I think.

[01:13:51] I think it's Eric Warren where he says like.

[01:13:53] Oh like.

[01:13:56] This horse would never want to go back.

[01:13:58] It already looks like it wants to leave the sky.

[01:14:00] Ready for adventure.

[01:14:02] They could trust him for that.

[01:14:03] That they're like oh yeah.

[01:14:04] The horse isn't going to want to come back.

[01:14:06] Because this person treats him with like absolute crap.

[01:14:08] Hmm.

[01:14:09] Love that.

[01:14:10] Yeah.

[01:14:15] What else do you have in chapter 12?

[01:14:18] Sam wrote that song.

[01:14:20] So that was cool.

[01:14:21] Oh.

[01:14:22] Oh.

[01:14:23] Oh.

[01:14:24] Wait.

[01:14:24] At the end of the song.

[01:14:25] Cause.

[01:14:27] Sam sings it.

[01:14:30] I don't know why they just said it's his turn or something.

[01:14:32] So he sings it.

[01:14:33] And at the end.

[01:14:35] Someone says.

[01:14:37] Oh where did you come by that one Sam?

[01:14:39] Asked Pippin.

[01:14:41] Frodo says.

[01:14:42] It's out of his own head of course.

[01:14:46] And then he kind of says like I'm learning all this stuff about Sam.

[01:14:49] That he's a conspirator.

[01:14:52] And now he's a jester.

[01:14:55] Freestyler.

[01:14:56] Yeah.

[01:14:57] He's killing it.

[01:14:58] A little safer there.

[01:14:59] And Lizzie's mine right now.

[01:15:01] They're all gathered together.

[01:15:02] And Sam has a mic and he's just.

[01:15:03] Yeah.

[01:15:05] Dropping bars.

[01:15:05] It just works.

[01:15:07] And once I started I can't stop.

[01:15:09] I love that so much.

[01:15:14] So Frodo rode this horse by himself.

[01:15:18] Back to.

[01:15:20] Yeah.

[01:15:21] Yeah.

[01:15:21] They took it's bags off and then they put Frodo on it.

[01:15:24] Mm.

[01:15:25] And then Glorfindel wasn't.

[01:15:27] Or wait are you saying.

[01:15:28] Just staying with the horse.

[01:15:29] Their horse or once Glorfindel got.

[01:15:31] I'm so confused.

[01:15:33] The horse took him on the journey.

[01:15:36] And then.

[01:15:36] Just Frodo.

[01:15:38] So.

[01:15:38] No.

[01:15:39] The gas of the sun.

[01:15:40] At the end I thought so.

[01:15:42] At the end of the Prancing Pony they woke up.

[01:15:44] And all their ponies and horses were gone.

[01:15:46] Yeah.

[01:15:47] So they had to get a new one from this.

[01:15:49] Dumpy dude.

[01:15:50] Okay.

[01:15:50] And they were just using him as like a pack mule.

[01:15:52] I don't think they rode on him.

[01:15:54] Did they ride on him?

[01:15:54] I don't think so.

[01:15:55] They.

[01:15:56] You were just using him as a pack mule.

[01:15:58] And then when Frodo got stabbed.

[01:15:59] They were still using him as that.

[01:16:01] When he was like part of the journey.

[01:16:02] And then Glorfindel came right.

[01:16:03] And they put Frodo on the horse because he was losing even more.

[01:16:06] I thought Frodo got on the horse and all the stuff that was on the horse got put on people's bags.

[01:16:12] Yeah.

[01:16:12] Yep.

[01:16:12] And then when Glorfindel came I thought he put Frodo on the horse and that's when the black riders came.

[01:16:21] And then he gave the command to the horse to just run home.

[01:16:26] And then I pictured it like Frodo just bolted on the horse even though he kind of didn't want to.

[01:16:32] And then made it across the river and completely left everyone else in the dust.

[01:16:37] That's how I kind of read it where everyone else was far behind.

[01:16:41] The only thing I got confused is that he kept telling the horse to go faster and it wasn't going faster.

[01:16:46] And then all of a sudden there was like an elvish phrase or word and it went even faster.

[01:16:52] Oh yeah.

[01:16:52] So then I was like who said that?

[01:16:53] Did Frodo say that?

[01:16:54] I think Glorfindel said that.

[01:16:56] But is he on the horse with him?

[01:16:57] No.

[01:16:58] He's away.

[01:16:59] That's what I'm saying.

[01:17:00] I'm so confused.

[01:17:02] That's actually something that I'm confused on too.

[01:17:03] At the end when he crosses the Ford, Glorfindel puts Frodo on his horse and then sends him across the Ford.

[01:17:10] And then he says these words to the horse and it goes across the Ford.

[01:17:13] But then does Glorfindel stay back and like is he fighting the wraiths at that moment?

[01:17:17] I thought he stayed back only because and I'll have to reread it now.

[01:17:21] Like Frodo didn't want to leave because he was saying to like them, I can't leave you guys.

[01:17:27] And they're like, to be honest, we're safer without you.

[01:17:30] And so then he's like, oh, OK, cool.

[01:17:31] I can leave.

[01:17:33] Sorry, I'm just rereading.

[01:17:35] And then because he said he changed the stirrups to Frodo's size.

[01:17:39] That's why I was like, oh, that makes sense that Frodo is by himself on the horse.

[01:17:44] But then I was curious for this Elvish unless what's his name?

[01:17:50] Glorfindel.

[01:17:51] Yeah.

[01:17:52] Does he say that phrase or word from land to the horse and then it actually takes off?

[01:17:59] I think so.

[01:18:02] Yeah, it's right at the end.

[01:18:04] So that's why I'm just looking at these as a side note.

[01:18:06] And this is something because Sam sings his little song.

[01:18:09] The last stanza was wild.

[01:18:14] The last stanza is wild.

[01:18:16] It goes, Tom's leg is game since he came, since home he came.

[01:18:21] And his bootless foot is lasting lame.

[01:18:24] But troll don't care and he's still there.

[01:18:27] With a bone he boned from its owner.

[01:18:30] Donor, boner.

[01:18:31] Oh, yeah.

[01:18:32] I was laughing at that.

[01:18:34] I was laughing at that.

[01:18:54] It was toward the end where he says something.

[01:19:00] Glorfindel and Strider followed as rear guard.

[01:19:03] Norlim.

[01:19:04] Then they see a black rider.

[01:19:06] Yeah.

[01:19:06] Asphaloth.

[01:19:07] Norlim.

[01:19:08] Norlim.

[01:19:10] Asphaloth.

[01:19:11] Fly.

[01:19:12] The enemy is upon us.

[01:19:14] I like that the elves or that the horses are Elvish.

[01:19:17] They understand the Elvish tongue more than the English tongue.

[01:19:22] Norlim.

[01:19:23] Norlim.

[01:19:24] Asphaloth.

[01:19:25] And then I see.

[01:19:27] Oh, that's ride on ride on.

[01:19:29] In Elvish.

[01:19:31] And Asphaloth must be the horse's name.

[01:19:34] Great name.

[01:19:35] It's capitalized.

[01:19:37] And yeah, so I took that as then he goes riding.

[01:19:43] Riding off.

[01:19:44] Like he's gone.

[01:19:46] It sped away with Frodo on it.

[01:19:48] And then it was only Frodo and then all the riders just followed him.

[01:19:55] Right.

[01:19:56] I also did want to point out that there's been a little theory bopping around on the internet

[01:20:01] that I bought into after the movies where Gandalf says fly you fools.

[01:20:07] And it is like, oh yeah, obviously find the eagles and then fly all the way.

[01:20:11] But this is the second time we see the word fly in here used as a verb to go or flee, not

[01:20:19] to literally take flight.

[01:20:21] So I'm starting to think that online theory that Gandalf was telling them to take the eagles

[01:20:25] is not true.

[01:20:27] Oh yeah.

[01:20:27] I always thought that line was like, get out of here.

[01:20:30] I was like, oh yeah, that would be so cool.

[01:20:31] Oh yeah, they totally should.

[01:20:32] And then I was like, no, I don't think that's what he was telling them.

[01:20:35] Yeah.

[01:20:36] I love that it was like people online are coming up.

[01:20:39] Lizzie just said the birds are the worst, right?

[01:20:41] Yeah.

[01:20:41] Yeah, it's true.

[01:20:42] Or not.

[01:20:43] You just said that, but in the beginning.

[01:20:45] They could be spies and there's worse stuff out there, you know?

[01:20:47] I'm trying.

[01:20:48] I'm grasping onto all I can to stay in.

[01:20:52] I was nervous how much power it feels like the black riders have over Frodo.

[01:20:59] Like it feels like they could get him to not even want to ride.

[01:21:03] Yeah.

[01:21:03] And then even at the river, it felt like he had to resist like a lot.

[01:21:08] Where I was like, can he resist?

[01:21:10] But isn't that the whole point?

[01:21:12] Yeah, but I guess I always viewed it like the ring had the power.

[01:21:15] I didn't feel like the riders did.

[01:21:18] But then in this, it feels like they kind of had more power than I thought.

[01:21:23] But is it because he has the ring?

[01:21:25] Yeah.

[01:21:25] Yeah, maybe.

[01:21:26] But maybe I think it's just my movie mindset.

[01:21:28] In the movies, I don't get that impression.

[01:21:30] It feels like when they're around, he wants to put the ring on maybe, but not that they

[01:21:35] can make him want to slow the horse down or like not go across the river.

[01:21:41] I guess because it's so far away.

[01:21:43] The movie that I'm like, this seems right though.

[01:21:45] Like any evil influence can like persuade him because he has the ring with him.

[01:21:56] So like anything that's evil can like kind of like attack him with thoughts or do, you

[01:22:04] know, like decisions and stuff.

[01:22:06] It seems like the rates have some kind of control over the ring.

[01:22:09] Like they are there.

[01:22:10] Maybe they're able to figure out like how to control it.

[01:22:12] And then the ring has some control over Frodo.

[01:22:14] So like if they're in close proximity, maybe through some kind of magic, they can control

[01:22:19] a ring, which then controls Frodo.

[01:22:21] And in this case, they literally shut his mouth.

[01:22:23] Yeah.

[01:22:23] So we were talking about how words have power.

[01:22:25] He says by Elbereth and by Luthien.

[01:22:27] Yeah.

[01:22:27] Yeah.

[01:22:28] And then immediately, boom, the leader steps across and Frodo was stricken dumb.

[01:22:33] He felt his tongue cleave to his mouth and his heart laboring.

[01:22:37] So then I'm like, oh my goodness, what?

[01:22:39] Like this power felt like it was beyond the ring or whatever.

[01:22:43] It was like they can make him not be able to speak.

[01:22:45] Like, so yeah.

[01:22:48] Well, I just because Sauron wants this ring so bad.

[01:22:54] Yeah.

[01:22:55] That I feel like once they know that he has it, it's like all powers are like towards him.

[01:23:01] So yeah, it makes sense to me, but it does.

[01:23:04] Yeah.

[01:23:05] And I do even I like what we're talking about even before with Glorfindel.

[01:23:10] Like I love this.

[01:23:11] Like Glorfindel is kind of annoying to me.

[01:23:14] I like the idea where it's almost like a battle of the bastards thing where like he sends them on his way and battle of the bastards is like Game of Thrones where it's like one guy fighting against this massive army because he's like, let me take them.

[01:23:28] And this is one of those scenes where I just imagine in my head so clearly of Glorfindel like last second gets off the horse, sends the horse and everyone else across the river and like pulls out his sword and it's like, come on.

[01:23:41] I know that's not really how it happens.

[01:23:43] I know that's not really how it happens, but in my head I'm like, okay, that's pretty cool.

[01:23:45] And he legit could do that.

[01:23:46] Yeah.

[01:23:46] Yeah.

[01:23:47] I kind of love that.

[01:23:49] And so this also makes me question some of this too.

[01:23:52] Maybe the elves aren't going to be that involved in this at all.

[01:23:54] But we, we kind of know a little bit of Elrond's power to some extent.

[01:23:59] Um, why doesn't someone like Elrond come and just destroy the race?

[01:24:05] Like, could he do that?

[01:24:06] Do the race have them?

[01:24:07] Like, do they have that much power where these people who are super powerful in this world right now can't touch them?

[01:24:14] Because maybe they're just not living or dead so they, they can't kill them in any way.

[01:24:18] I thought, yeah, I thought you couldn't kill a wraith.

[01:24:22] I thought they just exist as long as Sauron is orchestrating them.

[01:24:27] They just have, uh, unlimited respawns.

[01:24:30] Hmm.

[01:24:30] The worst.

[01:24:31] I do view them as killable.

[01:24:33] I just don't know how.

[01:24:34] Hmm.

[01:24:34] Throw them in the...

[01:24:35] Whoa.

[01:24:36] Yeah, that's pretty intense.

[01:24:38] Super light.

[01:24:39] Make it happen.

[01:24:41] Yeah.

[01:24:42] Hmm.

[01:24:43] What we, there are few even in Rivendell that can ride openly against the nine.

[01:24:47] I guess it doesn't mean kill them, but at least scare them off.

[01:24:49] Hmm.

[01:24:50] Um, and Glorfindel, I guess is one of them.

[01:24:55] I view Elrond as being less powerful, but more wise.

[01:24:59] So I guess I viewed him as delegating and he's saying, oh, you guys are actually better at this fighting and killing stuff.

[01:25:05] I've got to stay here, be in charge.

[01:25:07] It's his house.

[01:25:08] And I guess it's a magic thing.

[01:25:10] I view that there is power in that, like staying in that land and managing things and a man being in his own house.

[01:25:19] Um, so I don't know.

[01:25:20] Is he more powerful?

[01:25:22] Hmm.

[01:25:22] Can they be killed?

[01:25:23] Yeah.

[01:25:24] I'm curious.

[01:25:24] We'll answer that question next time.

[01:25:26] But, uh, anything else before we do favorites?

[01:25:36] Nope.

[01:25:37] All right.

[01:25:38] Let's do hot tamale.

[01:25:40] Favorite character.

[01:25:41] And do we have names for these awards yet?

[01:25:44] The mushrooms.

[01:25:45] The mushrooms.

[01:25:46] Yeah.

[01:25:46] Basket of mushrooms.

[01:25:48] Basket of mushrooms.

[01:25:49] Who's the hot tamale that always stays?

[01:25:52] What was your favorite moment?

[01:25:58] I hate this part.

[01:26:00] You like going last.

[01:26:02] Oh, you like going last.

[01:26:03] All right.

[01:26:03] Good.

[01:26:03] I was told I have to count in my head because I can't go first.

[01:26:06] I steal all of Jen's ideas.

[01:26:09] So I just, now I just wait.

[01:26:11] Then you guys then.

[01:26:12] Oh, okay.

[01:26:12] Nice.

[01:26:12] Cool.

[01:26:12] And then I can always.

[01:26:15] Yeah.

[01:26:16] I think, uh, mine, my, I think my hot tamale is Aragorn.

[01:26:22] The basket of mushrooms, I think belongs to Sam just cause I liked his skepticism and he

[01:26:27] seemed like the only, not the only, but he seemed like the rational person.

[01:26:30] Like he was just like, guys, let's slow down.

[01:26:33] Let's actually do what Gandalf wants us to do and like question things and like make sure

[01:26:36] these, we can actually trust these people.

[01:26:39] Like, um, yeah, I like his, uh, he holds back a little bit.

[01:26:46] And then I think my favorite moment was the introduction of Aragorn when he's just

[01:26:50] like sitting in like brewing and like, and like his hood is covering his face and you

[01:26:55] can just barely see his eyes.

[01:26:57] Like I like love that.

[01:26:59] It's, it was such a cool character introduction for me.

[01:27:02] I was like, Oh man, this is awesome.

[01:27:04] I love this.

[01:27:07] It's cause of the movie.

[01:27:08] Yeah, exactly.

[01:27:09] It really is cause of the movie.

[01:27:10] But then you'll be like, yeah, it was still so close to it.

[01:27:12] But yeah, having that image.

[01:27:14] Yeah.

[01:27:14] I'm driving and listening.

[01:27:15] So it's not the green.

[01:27:18] Um, yeah, I'll say, um, hot tamale is going to be glorfandel.

[01:27:26] Um, cause I liked him and I felt relieved when he arrived and then I liked that he was a

[01:27:32] little bit more.

[01:27:35] Well, the fact that I didn't know he existed, you know, and then he just shows up and, um,

[01:27:39] I didn't view him as a Chad, but then a basket of mushrooms is going to go Aragorn.

[01:27:47] Um, he was just great through and through and favorite moment.

[01:27:52] Yeah.

[01:27:53] At the end, a horse riding fast.

[01:27:56] Whoa.

[01:27:56] You just copied all.

[01:27:58] Which I will say too, cause the audio cut out for about 15 seconds.

[01:28:02] Jen's were all those pretty much.

[01:28:04] Danny just copied.

[01:28:05] You were glorfandel too.

[01:28:06] No, no, not that one.

[01:28:08] That's the only one.

[01:28:09] Yeah.

[01:28:09] Yeah.

[01:28:09] All I heard was what I wanted to hear.

[01:28:14] Yeah.

[01:28:15] Good.

[01:28:15] Uh, horse.

[01:28:17] More.

[01:28:18] What glorfandel.

[01:28:19] Yeah.

[01:28:20] He was my hot tamale.

[01:28:21] Oh yeah.

[01:28:22] Yeah.

[01:28:23] Aragorn is the favorite character.

[01:28:25] He gets the house cup basket of mushrooms.

[01:28:28] I like basket of mushrooms.

[01:28:30] I'm just not sold on it.

[01:28:31] I'm hoping something better.

[01:28:33] Come along.

[01:28:33] You know,

[01:28:35] Um,

[01:28:35] at the moment it's a good basket.

[01:28:37] Yeah.

[01:28:37] Maybe we'll do that.

[01:28:38] And then who gets the shard of Narsal?

[01:28:40] Yeah.

[01:28:41] The shard.

[01:28:42] That rolls off the tongue.

[01:28:46] Um,

[01:28:48] my favorite moment is when the Mr. Butterbur says he has a letter from Gandalf.

[01:28:56] Cause I just got really excited reading that.

[01:28:58] Oh yeah.

[01:28:58] And I just liked the way that whole scene unfolded with them.

[01:29:00] Then like,

[01:29:01] I just love the letter itself.

[01:29:04] And then figuring out,

[01:29:05] is this Aragorn actually good?

[01:29:06] Or do we trust him?

[01:29:08] The mystery elements.

[01:29:09] Yeah.

[01:29:09] So that was my favorite moment.

[01:29:11] Um,

[01:29:12] favorite character.

[01:29:13] I'd probably say Aragorn.

[01:29:14] And then just to be different,

[01:29:16] I'll say a hot tamale is Sam.

[01:29:18] Nice.

[01:29:18] He has a line where he's like,

[01:29:20] I can carry like two people's bags.

[01:29:23] Yeah.

[01:29:24] Yeah.

[01:29:24] Nice.

[01:29:24] okay Sam.

[01:29:26] Like,

[01:29:27] show off.

[01:29:29] That made me laugh.

[01:29:31] Cause I was like,

[01:29:31] what are you doing?

[01:29:32] Like,

[01:29:33] obviously Aragorn's there.

[01:29:34] So I got this.

[01:29:38] Yeah.

[01:29:38] That is great.

[01:29:39] Was fantastic.

[01:29:41] Well,

[01:29:41] thanks for joining us on our journey of the fellowship of the first time readers.

[01:29:45] Until next time.

[01:30:07] Oh,

[01:30:07] also in the movies,

[01:30:09] Mary and Pippin are comic relief the whole time.

[01:30:11] So I love seeing Mary just going for a while.

[01:30:14] Yeah.

[01:30:14] Same.

[01:30:15] He's like a great moment.

[01:30:16] Yeah.

[01:30:17] He's just like,

[01:30:18] he was smart.

[01:30:19] Like what he did,

[01:30:20] like,

[01:30:20] yeah,

[01:30:21] commended by Aragorn as being very wise and smart.

[01:30:23] Yep.

[01:30:24] What he did.

[01:30:24] Very brave.
